Educate me on the "GIOS" brand please
I have admired Gios bicycles ever since I seen one in a movie 35 ish years ago and now in a position to restore one. Of the same vintage (early 80's) one could have a "Gios Toreno" or a "Gios" and I am curious about the difference if any. Is one a higher quality frame from the same company or is it more like having a "F Moser" compared to the "Moser" branded knockoff ?

I'm not a specialist in Gios but far as I know was the label Gios Torino common in the early eighties. Some years later, in the second half of the eighties it was just Gios with the Compact/Evolution.
Sinde the split between Aldo and Alfredo uses Aldo the Italian Gios Torino and Alfredo the Japanese Gios. But that's much later.

the U.S. agent for the marque during the era under discussion was the FAEMA (later FAMA) Sales Company of New York City
GIOS was their only cycle related product line
the firm's main business was and is espresso machines
company founder was Ugo Quazzo
met him the first time at a trade show for restaurant equipment in SanFrancisco during 1980

a short history is provided at https://web.archive.org/web/20171027...toria/dal-1948 and
https://steel-vintage.com/magazine/s.../gios-bicycles
there were non-authorised bikes being built elsewhere which did not have the features of the Gios brothers frames from Turin. This resulted in legal action.
more background on the creation of the second company (outside of the Turin home) to deal with the legal issues https://www.flickr.com/photos/8379107@N03/8112429688
the distinguishing features of the models https://giostorino.it/registro-storico-gios/ ie how to spot a real Gios Torino
the historical Register of bikes https://www.facebook.com/rsgiostorino (which includes mine) vetted by Marco Gios based on the photo submission by the owner.
Gios Torino continues to be run by Aldo and his son Marco where they continue to make the bikes. And they are very proud of their family company history. https://giostorino.it/

Watch A Sunday in Hell on Youtube, Roger De Vlaiminck features prominently in the film on a GIOS
De Vlaiminck was a very well known peer of Eddy Merckx who made GIOS a well known brand in cycling by winning often
They were also pretty big in cyclocross back then too

I have a 1991 Gios Compact. So that was well before the split of the company, but after the de Vlaeminck era so mine has investment cast lugs like other Italian steel frames from that era. Also gone we’re the fork crowns with coins. For an Italian racing bike from that general era, I find it to be very stable at racing speeds….not quick steering at all and even more so than a Colnago or De Rosa. Other than RDV, famous racers associated with the Gios brand include Fons de Wolf and Stephen Roche. Gios often seems to be left out of discussions of the great Italian brands with a big footprint from that era, but I think they deserve to be mentioned with DeRosa, Colnago, and Pinarello.

How many owners can say that their bicycles were delivered this way?
Best, Ben

Later Gios
I have a few- two from the mid 70's and one from the earlier 80's ( one with the coins)
I forget but the model names changed, I need to go into the Bike Room at work.
the 80's bike has a shorter top tube and steep head tube angle. The 70's bikes are definitely more traditional road bike.
the Blue is iconic.

It's an iconic brand from an iconic era. Until recently, GIOS and Gios Torino were interchangeable. I used to own a Gios Compact from 1990. It was a good bike.
Could you post a picture of bike you wish to restore?
