HELP!!! 1987 Cannondale SR500 in unknown color...
Can anyone tell me if this color is a factory option? I cannot find it in any of the catalogs. It is a green/purple/blue metallic color changing paint. The decals look original but there is nothing on the seat tube below the top tube. The serial number indicates the bike is a 1987 and the remaining original equipment is 105.
The pics are as good as I could get, the paint is difficult to photograph. The bike is also filthy, as it was $50. For reference, I thought it was a black lightning because it was so dirty. At least it's the correct size!
I own 2-3 of these frames, so I'm really just curious about the paint color I've never seen. The updated Shimano 600 shifters and RD are not original according to production dates.
Happy tinkering!

Good question. I haven't really inspected it too closely yet. It flashed across my local facespace marketplace for $50. Really just wanted the frame TBH. First glance, it's had many replacement parts over the past 30 years.
Never seen this color though.

Thats a tasty bike... I assume it may have been a custom order or something?! Or maybe it was resprayed at some point?

The second picture looks like my ST400, which the catalog calls Metallic Blue.

Still popular and available paint. I saw two street custom cars in it in the last year.
It's hard to document, but your bike looks more of a metallic blue.

I bought my Kamelion CAAD3 off the Cannondale rep's truck in late 1997 after supposedly having been displayed at the Interbike show. The rep brought it to the Santa Cruz bike swap with a large number of other C'dale framesets. Mine had very subtle dents to either side of the top tube, not even noticed until some time after I built it up.
Funny story about my purchase! Firstly that a large group had been watching the rep unload his truck, one frameset at a time, with so many odd-sized and other weird frames that at some point we were all half asleep as if mesmerized. But I suddenly woke up and asked about the one nice frameset in my size (56cm) that was being carefully laid out and was able to grab it instantly for $125 looking brand new. Some dejected looks seemed to gaze upon my instant score as I recall.
Funnier yet was that I had no idea that I hadn't bought an ordinary metallic blue CAAD3, and it wasn't until a day or two later that I went out into the garage of the rented house and noticed by the light of the window that my frame had been swapped for one that was gold/green in color. I was shocked to say the least, actually thinking that someone had somehow swapped frames on me!

Mine came with a Kestrel EMS fork and Ultegra headset, so I completed the build with 6500 STI levers, Topline SL cranks, older Superbe calipers and some 28h lightweight wheels I had already built and never used.

First photo sort of reminds me of my Anthracite ST1000.

I've been wondering if that is the color. It must have been an option to get custom paint colors from the catalog on whatever frame you were ordering, because mine is definitely the Criterium frame. Looking forward to getting it all polished up so I can see what it actually looks like.

Do you have any more photos of the bike? A full bike shot might help. I'm wondering if it may have been a replacement frame. Or, it could be that someone repainted an 87 and only thew on a top tube decal.

I will have more once I start cleaning it up in the next few weeks. I can finally see light at the end of my honey-do list!

The decals set is a little odd for the year.
