Atlantis?
The moon?
With the missing socks?

finished a ride between raindrops and looked down, cap was missing. Then I remembered that brand new pair in the box I picked up recently. The drivers side was missing it's cap too.

Where do they go?

Caps with serrated edges that stand proud of the barrel into which they are screwed, will un-screw as you insert or remove your foot.

Use a thread-locker on them.

I used to ride the Leotard platforms on my Peugeot UO-8 fix gear. I never knew where those left caps went but I did know why. That UO-8 BB, already low - part of the ride people love so much - got lowered further with 700c sewup wheels. Quite a bit. Even though I rode 168 cranks, touching them on corners just meant i took that corner faster than an old lady. And every touch of the left pedal was a drag back on the bottom of that right-hand threaded cap. (If only Leotard could have done those left pedals up "right" and provided dust caps with left-hand threads! I have a box of old, dead platforms with no caps (the press fit assembly doesn't hold up with the required pulling to get up say Seattle's east-west streets). Every pair went onto the box with just one cap which got robbed to feed the next set.)

Another way to think about this. Suppose you were a dust cap? Would you rather spent your life screwed to a cold bar of aluminum, getting to go out in nature periodically, only to spend hours just spinning in circles? Or suppose you could detach, roll off tho the street edge, hang out with pebbles your size and commune with earthworms and other gentle souls?

I don't know what the pedal caps look like, so this might not be a valid question, but; could pedal caps be a good 3D printing project? I'm always looking for small parts to make.

I made these drop out spacers recently. They are replicas of what came on my 1988 Centurion. The bike was missing one when I got it. The originals were white.

once saw a single panel cartoon wish had saved

two astronauts/spacemen are standing on the cratered surface of some planet or moon

the landscape is a rather uniform one of small craters

the only thing on the surface are these dark boomerang shapes about a foot long

one astronaut says to the other - "So this is where all the missing socks go!"

In the bucket right beside the oil hole clip bucket, of course.

Sorry, I couldn't resist.

Here's another question: For all of the missing pedal dust caps out there, has anyone ever found one out on the road?

I think that young girls pick them up. Everyone one of them, so I've heard.

No, and I walk my dog everywhere, usually along bike paths. Never seen one in the wild.

Some years ago I was looking for a dust cap for Shimano 6207s which are notorious for disappearing dust caps. In my searches, I did come across a 3D print model. https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4711163

Where do al the pedal caps go?

If they're good, they go to Pedal Cap Heaven.

If they're bad, they get recycled into a part destined for a really cheap department store bike.

It's expensive flying up there and intercepting them before they get to the Pearly Gates.
