Built/riding a raw frame..Too late to turn back now..
Going to San Diego, CA for a few weeks and decided to build this up. Dont know how people feel about riding raw frames, but I had to take advantage of the 'work trip' and get this frame ready for some San Diego scenic rides! Cheers!

Nice! Sorta the rat rod look. Performance parts on primer or bare metal. I don't much like painting, so I have done this too. Didn't bother to strip it completely, just around the areas I needed to braze. I use linseed oil mixed with coleman gas to keep it from rusting.

I’ve been riding this around for the past month — a ratty mix of bare steel, chrome, and flaking paint.
I do like to paint, but the weather won’t be conducive to it for a few more months. I haven’t done anything to prevent rust because it’s goin* to get further stripped before long anyway. I just couldn’t wait to ride it.
The OP bike looks very nice.

Does clear powdercoat on steel count?
I have no idea who made this frame, it's french, the fork is an SR.
When it came back I really liked the colour, and that you could see where the braze was.
It was the first frame I'd had media-blasted and I did not ask the fellow who did it if that's the way it was or the blasting would have smoothed it out.
If it didn't get smoothed it looks pretty tidy to me.

This thread has inspired me! I've got a mostly stripped Holdsworth Pro (it's got some very tenacious primer from a PO repaint on it...) sitting in the basement I've been trying to decide what to do with. Everything I build up I end up preferring my PX-10 over, so I've been debating how far to go with the Holdsworth.... brush-paint? rattle-can? powder-coat....? So maybe wipe it down with linseed oil, build it up, and try it out when things warm up and then decide what to do with it...

Yes its a Eddy Merckx Corsa Extra MAX to be exact. I will take in for paint when the time comes (which is closer to a month or so) but for now, just want to enjoy this frame. Parking lot test ride left me happy.

Its a MAX. Could even be (lets hope not) it started as an Eddy Mercx Motorola Corsa Extra at least based on seat lug.
Here's a raw bike I built as a gift to a friend
90% polished raw frame (then my dremel melted). Since he couldnt make up his mind when I asked what color does he want I told him he gets it without any paint with decal set but i made him a set of temporary decals so he can be proud also whil he figures out which way to go. He liked it as is and has no plans to paint it at all.

Took this for the first ride ever today, and had been lingering as a project for quite some time. '87 Ironman Expert I got from the co-op. Frozen stem and seatpost. Had the Miami Vice colors, but I had to do the lye treatment on the seatpost. Unfortunately I was a novice with the whole thing and neglected to protect the paint well enough, so I just stripped it. Found a decent 1" threadless fork. In hindsight, I wish I would have protected the paint better, but in my mind the paint was stunningly perfect, when it reality it was probably not.
Still needs little things tweaked here and there - the hanger is out of whack, the PVC headset spacer isn't doing the look any favors, and the brifters are stripped of internals while I evaluate shifting options. Needs new pads. Mainly a mix of Ultegra and DA, with some other random bobs and bits thrown in. Made my own chain micro chain tensioners so I don't have to worry about wheel slippage (had issues previously). I haven't weighed it, but I'm guessing it is sub-19 or 20lbs. Feels very light. Nice springy ride. 1st impressions good. I'm loving the 1x7 setup and the chainline is great.
I've had the frame bare for probably 3+ years, with no special protection on it while its languished in the garage, waiting for me to do something with it. It has extremely light surface rust over parts of it, but I was surprised at just how well it did. I'm half tempted to clean off the rust, keep the outside oiled up, and roll with it. The luxury of not having to worry about scraping paint (and paying for it in the first place) nearly negates the protection I'd want from paint.
I have done several builds in a raw finish. First was a 1989 Centurion Le Mans I have for a while - I sold it, but that was actually a great bike. I like doing a 'gun blue' finish, using Permablue over raw steel. Makes for a cool look. If you can keep the rust at bay, it is fantastic.
Here is a bike I did several years ago, and I still have it - Trek 990 moutain bike from around 1996. Paint was rough, and was the only good part of the bike (was incomplete and had junk components), so I stripped the paint and did a gun blue finish...

Not exactly 'raw'- the primer on this thing is seriously tenatious! It had very thick black paint over this that I was able to peel off with a scraper. Built up so I can do a little riding on it where weather permits and decide what to do finish-wise....
