Fauxroica 2023 - April 9th
Eroica California isn't until September, starting and ending in Cambria. A few years ago COVID cancelled the Eroica Cali event, but since so many people already had vacation time booked, hotel reservations, plane flights, and a gnawing need to get out and ride with other people that an unofficial "Fauxroica" event sorta kinda organically happened. Well, I should say the good folks at VeloCambria pimped it up, and it happened. Outside of having no rest stations, food, water, or mechnics on the course, we had a great time. Many took the opportunity to create their own route. Some even snuck in bike kit that wouldn't pass Eroica inspection.
Not wanting to compete with Eroica California, a spring date was bandied about off-list with many forum members. There was a heavy bias to having it in early April as past Eroicas have been held. Much of it was from the PNW contingent that desparately wanted to do the ride during our mossy season. Others argued to start in Paso Robles to ride the routes "as God intended." ;-)
I've got a whole messa BF and CR members planning a ride down the coast from the Bay Area to Paso Robles the week before. That ride is completely booked, with a Plan B in case Hwy 1 isn't open by then. I'll start a separate post for that later. We're quite amenable to adding harbor pilots along the way. We're looking to recreate Touroica.
The natural pool of people wanting to join in an unofficial ride is from NorCal and SoCal, since they're both a fairly easy drive away. I'm guessing some might want to stay in the Cambria area, others in Paso Robles. Our group booked a humongous Airbnb in Atascadero, most arriving Friday night by bike, some by car. We'll likely have a big BBQ dinner on Saturday night, invite only through PM or email if interested.

Not this year, but I give a hearty two-thumbs up on the idea. The riding is superbe there, and spring is a better time for it than September. And that dinner was fantastic, too.

Is there meat on that tortilla? Can't tell, but if so, that rules @SquireBlack out. As I recall he was eating the heck out of the grilled portabellos and goat cheese. @Choke did a great job on those, very tasty even for the omnivores among us.

California, has gotten hit by biblical rains lately, but my audacious side tells me that things will calm down by the April 9th weekend. I have a ginormous Palazzo in Atascadero rented, with a few spare beds still if anyone is interested, PM me. Or just come up for the day, or make your own reservations. NorCal/SoCal peeps, here's your chance to relive Eroica California of the past, when it started in Paso Robles, and the big climbs of Kiler and Cypress were done early in the day, and the early afternoons were spent tooling down Hwy 1 between Cambria and Cayucas. A beer or two at the Cayucas pier made climbing up Santa Rita a bit more enjoyable.
California, has gotten hit by biblical rains lately, but my audacious side tells me that things will calm down by the April 9th weekend. I suspect that much of the route in these areas may still be impassible in April. Old Creek Road has been closed for a bit due to rock/mud slides, that's the road up past Whale Creek Res. I can't imagine Kiler Canyon not being severely damaged and Cypress Mtn Rd, Santa Rosa, Santa Rita are currently closed. You can see whats going on at the link below.

You might look at parts of the older routes that went by Cass and Sculpterra Wineries. Also, N. River Rd is really good to ride and has been used in the Central Coast Double and many Brevets in the area. Peachy Canyon and Vineyard Dr are also great roads to ride and were part of the route in previous years. You can probably get more current local info from these guys.

Ha, so true! Even though I have ridden every section of the long routes in years past, that is not likely to ever happen again! Barricaded closures will seal the deal for sure this year!
