A ride back in time...
 

Last Saturday's ride with the Camellia City Vintage Lightweight Cycling Club here in Sacramento. Kind of cool, as we went looking for the location of a long-gone, 1890's, bike shop.

That looked like a good ride with a neat end goal. [MENTION=402426]JoeBass[/MENTION] that 1929 Hercules is a beauty. Do you have a thread on it already? If not, can you post some pictures of it and perhaps a story or two about how you came to acquire it, get it to it's present state and what your thoughts on it are?

Oh, darn. That sounds like I am giving a homework assignment. I pretty much am. I would love to learn more about your bike. Whatever, you can offer would be apricated.

When I look at myself in that outfit, I can't shake the impression that I look like someone that's about to get shot out of a canon in a French circus. :)

Vintage is the only type of ride I and many others on this site do. Thank you for posting!

It is good to see you worked with the experts for much of the specialty work on this special bike. That Persons seat/saddle is the cherry on the top. The video work was also excellent. The fades to black and white with the jittery film advance made it look like you were really riding way back when this bike was current.

I think the story that this bike may have been a training bike that had some of the components replaced with American made parts after the Olympics makes sense. Sometime the truth is better than fiction. Incredible story and incredible bike.

I recently turned up a video on YouTube showing Frank Southall from the British Olympic team at the 1932 Olympics. In the early part of the video, he was riding a bike with what looked to be the exact same fork (showed a close-up) and from what I could see, the rest of the bike looked identical as well. They showed him riding that bike, which looked like this Hercules, during practice, and then during the real racing he was on what looked like a more specialized, dedicated race bike. Seems to make it a little more likely that the story is true. :)

Thanks for the great video, Joe. I bet it was a blast showing the employees in the store what was there 120years ago. It was also fun to see some familiar faces and get glimpses of the great bikes, including bibliobob 's oh-so-pretty dusty rose Cinelli SC . I'm sorry I missed out, but hope to join in again down the road.

We should've mentioned the jersey in the intro to the video as it has a direct tie-in to the old Sacramento bike shop photos. That's a reproduction of a Capital City Wheelmen jersey, with the CCW being the first cycling club in Sacramento (est.1897) and the club responsible for creating the original version of the American River Bike Trail. Here's a video with the whole story and some photos of those original cyclists with their "CCW" jerseys:

Your jerseys came out great! When I first started looking for someone that did chain stitching, I was shocked by how few folks still had the machines and skills to do it. Hopefully it won't become a lost art!
