Not sure how I missed this--yup; I snagged that one. 1980 version (last year with centerpulls, I think?), and I believe I paid $100 for it because it wasn't totally original (but close enough). Sweet riding bike; cruises in comfort and descends amazingly well, but it climbs like a mule and rewards a quick cadence.

I’ll add my newly-built Pro-Tour to the mix here. According to the serial number it’s an ‘81.

Nice. Pretty darn good fender line, too.

Thanks! It took a lot of patience getting them dialed in.

Keep it! It’s a beauty.

Wow! I thought the burgandy with chrome was super cool, but your bike is sharp!

BTW - I sold mine pretty soon after I posted the finished version, no regrets, but I would've kept it if I didn't alreay have a couple of nice 80s touring type bikes

I hear ya. Looks like you already have plenty of nice bikes in the stable. Plus, there are plenty more out there still to acquire. :)

gorgeous build! the leather bar tape really pulls it together and gives it an extra touch of class.

If you're referring to mine, it's Newbaum's khaki tape with amber shellac.

One of my favorite bikes I’ve seen on here in a minute. Well done.

I know very little about Japanese bikes outside 3Rensho.

this came into the co-op. Seeing the chromed/polished spears made me realize this might be special. (And not a give-away, but something to clean/tune/sell)

then I noticed the aero shifters.

and the campy 26.8 seatpost.

this one must be later than all y’all’s because it has cable guides on the top tube and instead of posts for centerpull, V-brake posts. (Not a bad thing)

can someone clue me as to what year this might be?

1982-84 roughly. 83-84 had LeTech FD/RD, earlier was Cyclone if I recall. Serial number should tell you more.

In Demand

Rarity/ desirability . I spotted my 79 model built in late 78 on CL and called at 0700. Seller was on his way to work but agreed to meet me at 1630. I was in his drive when he returned from work and the deal was done. He wanted to keep the cheap platform pedals so I agreed to to take the Campys he offered in exchange. He did comment that he had about 10 calls about the bike after mine but waved them all off trusting in my interest. My bike has the centerpull brakes, barend

shifters, triple chain rings, and 700c wheels. I love the ride enough to ignore a large area of missing paint on the down tube.

Vintage_Cyclist 04-02-25 05:28 PM

Probably an 83, based on the Cyclone gearing. 84 was specced with Suntour Letech gearing. Originally had a Sugino AT crank, can't tell what else changed.

I have one just like that, same color. I think it's an '83. Came with Araya 16A 27" rims with 36/40 stainless spokes and Suzue cartridge bearing hubs. Cantilever (not V-brakes). I think Cyclone MK II derailleur's were stock. Sugino AT crank as well. SR Laprade seat post.

Here was one I owned for a short time. Husband bought it for his wife who put maybe 15 miles on it before it was hung in the rafters for the following 3 decades.
I believe it was a 1979 model

Here is my 1977 Pro Tour as seen after the initial, this is to rotten to keep on the bike.. eg tires, cables, chain.. etc .. tear down.

I have been working on it slowly.

I think I can dig up a Sugino triple for the Centurian if that makes it more desirable to the collector. I'll post it to the "As found at the Co-op" when a price has been established.

Of course feel free to message me and toss of an offer before all that.

Robert

I'll be honest, I use Cantilever and V-brakes interchangeably because I've never bothered to learn the difference.

The wheels are as you say.

Mine was an '84 ProTour15

The ProTour was the first real bike, bought as an adult at age 34 (I rode a bunch as a kid). My cycling interest started 3 years before, when co-workers pulled me in on rides by loaning me their old bikes. I learned: 1) a 56cm Peugeot with 52/42 and perhaps 13/21 (?) did not fit, was squirrely and did not permit me to climb my hills in the Santa Cruz Mts; 2) a very tall English bike converted to 1X5 and geared for hills rode great, except trying to keep up on flats. Enter = The Time To Buy Your Own.

Visited a few bike shops early in '85, knowing I wanted a triple, that was a stable ride. Italians = generally too expensive. Droolworthy inventory pieces in Cupertino. Lots of shops+brands in 'the greater Stanford Univ area'. But in Willow Glen (if I remember) an LBS had a leftover, root beer colored tourer - On Sale Year Old Special for $299.

This is the last good pic, before it moved on in about 2013 (?). To a BFer. Then to another BFer, i heard.

Certainly not all original. Shrader valved heavy wheels, replacement rear wheel. Newer RD running 6speed. Aero hoods with new h'bars.
https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...833723e69b.jpg
The bike was so heavy that evaluating the tubeset fairly would be futile. Definitely trustworthy.

Robvolz 04-09-25 01:30 PM

I could not get that Centurian link to open.

Here is the serial number of the co-op bike.

it’s for sale now

size 59
$300
