A client’s perspective of having his Colnago super repaired and restored chronicled in BF gives terrific insight as to why the firm went on the trajectory it did.

What story Cycle Art Colnago are you referring to?

I would have to dig it up, Shinibop (sp) was the BF forum author.

the end result was good it was reported, the project did have a number of escapades along the way, seat stays were shown rusted out after sandblasting, the stays were at hand, which was good as the double tapered types are not plentiful, how all of this was communicated and other details such as charging a notable fee for any in progress digital snapshots and other positions taken definitely did cause “defense radar up” for anyone considering their services.

they did really great work and I wish they were still around, they provided a valuable service.

I have a bike painted by CycleArt - white Raleigh Pro - and it's absolutely spectacular, with multi color panels, matching fenders etc.

"better than new" but that's a common end state even with car restorers. I get the "defense radar up" angle. There were some stories.

But overall I wish they were still in business, and I understand why they are not.

business practices evolve, or they drift if unplanned. Some perspective taking is needed to maintain success.
due to the required painted by graphic, it is easy to ask if the rider commissioned the respray.
In anecdotal reports, generally happy with the outcome, frustrated by the experience.
( I noted creeping rust under the paint at braze ons and especially at top tube internal cable exits, all predictable, but notable)
in my assessment, there was a push to add on braze-ons, keeping in mind that for decades the vast majority of these machines were just out of date used bikes.
120 v 126 spaced, lacking the forest of added braze ons, archaic brake attachment.
‘Collecting and restoring old bikes was not a popular thing.

Judging by the article, 3 decades in business seems to have few equals.

For me, the result speaks for itself. Thirty years later, my CyclArt splurge still looks great and gets attention

I wonder if enough of us have these for a "Show Us Your CyclArt" thread. Or maybe we can just do that here. Here's my 1973 De Rosa repainted by CyclArt. I didn't send it to them. It was like this when I bought it.

I've read some of the stories about CyclArt over the years here, but don't have any experience dealing with them myself. I have a bike that was painted in 1989, and still shows pretty well. The paint on mine is laid on fairly thick though.

Further to [MENTION=111144]Andy_K[/MENTION] 's suggestion of "Show Us Your CyclArt" in Post #12, here is my early 80's Ron Cooper with it's CyclArt San Marcos repaint.

The original owner of this bike was obsessed with Porsche Guards Red. He chose it for this bike and a '84 Konno Allez that I also have. I suspect the pump braze-on and one/both sets of the water bottle bosses were added at the time of the repaint. Perhaps someone more knowledgeable could comment on whether CyclArt offered these services in addition to paint.

yes CycleArt would do minor braze ons and in some cases crash damage / frame tube replacement.

My 1984 De Rosa refinished by Cyclart over 15 years ago. Rear spacing was widened to 130, some braze on were repaired. The refinish has held up well.

A Merckx I owned was re-painted by CyclArt, by the previous owner. Nice paint, bit thick - but I passed on having them re-paint another bike as they declined to duplicate original decals.

This is my feeling as well. It almost looks like powder coating, but it's obviously an intentional style. I've got a Masi that's been repainted and looks very similar. I've wondered if maybe Jim Cunningham painted it, but it doesn't have a CyclArt sticker.

If you don’t have the CyclArt logo on the non-drive side chain stay, going to be tough to confirm its one of their paint jobs and I would actually say no it isn’t (since it lacks the logo). My 1985 Fisher Comp had CyclArt paint work from new, they painted many of the early US-built Fishers including the tiger- and zebra-striped Everests and tri-colored Comps that were in the magazines. Mine is just plain “maroon” but I do have “NORBA” Champion stripes, how rare is that?
