Eroica Montalcino 2023
Since this is one of the lesser known Eroica events, I thought I'd give it some airplay.
This was one Eroica event mrs non-fixie and I hadn't been to yet, and we thought visiting Tuscany in Spring would make a nice change. And it did. Especially the Crete Senesi is much greener in May than in early October.
We arrived on Friday, as the town of Montalcino was slowly gearing up for the event. No guessing as to what event was going to take place:

We picked up our "race packs" and settled down in town with a "Spritz" and enjoyed the atmosphere:

On Saturday we strolled into town to see what was going on ...
Saw lots of jerseys for sale ..
And mrs non-fixie decided the one thing missing from her wardrobe was a long-sleeve Brooklyn jersey, which they just happened to have at the 2Velo stand:
And we got the bikes ready for Sunday:

The start on Sunday morning was just like in Gaiole. Everyone lined up in the main street of the town:
My favorite bike of the day was this fire engine red Pinarello donna:
The scenery in the Montalcino area is even more beautiful than around Gaiole:
The food stops were similar (i.e. excellent), but less crowded. And the servings of Chianti wine were more generous:
The 46k route we did was definitely more difficult than the 46k at Gaiole. More gravel (this was one of the few bits that were somewhat level):
The climbs were one thing, but there were many steep and treacherous descents that kind of sucked the life out of us during the day. This was an easy one; I didn't bother to take pictures of the more difficult ones.
All in all it was a wonderful event, which I can heartily recommend.

Thank you! WRT the Pinarello: my best guess is mid seventies. Those locks were only popular for a relatively short time, as one can imagine, which was about then, IIRC.
