identifying vintage Guerciotti frames
 

Hi,
I have what I think is a mid 70's Guerciotti. I bought it from a close friend who purchased it in the late 70's or early 80's.

is there any way to narrow down when it was made? I can't find a serial number. The only thing stamped on the bottom bracket is "61", which I take to be the size.

Are there any tell tale characteristics that would identify it?

What frame material? Any Columbus decals?

Give us a list of the components. If someone can determine what is original or not,
that can help. I have an older Guerciotti and I guesstimated the date by the tubing type
and the drivetrain components, especially the tubing, because they only used it for a few years.

Oh yeah... photos help, too.

OK - I've got some more info and pictures -
the components that came on the bike were Campagnolo Record (maybe Super Record? - I've updated all the components and sold the originals back to the friend who sold me the bike) - the rear derailleur is stamped '75 or 1975, don't remember which for sure. The previous owner said that Campy stamped the year on their derailleurs.

The decal for the tubing is gone - previous owner is sure it's Columbus - possibly SL.

I've included pictures that show some of the frame details as well as the entire bike.

Any information you can provide is greatly appreciated!!

forgot to mention - the handlebars are original Cinelli - hard to see that in the engraving.

Yours friend's memory sounds right. Old ads and reviews show the Guerciotti still using cable clips on the top tube as late as 1978. The decal style had changed by at least 1984. So I'd say it is 1979-1983. Hopefully, someone else can narrow things down further.

You can verify it is Columbus by checking the bottom of the fork steerer for six spiral ribs. According to the 1978 review, frames 60cm and bigger were made from SP as opposed to SL. This was a fairly common practice during the era.

that reminds me - I bought a box of junk a while ago and one of the things that came in the box was an older Klein Performance (I think) frame. The steerer tube was rifled and I assumed that I'd scored a Columbus fork - but after I took it apart I found the fork was Tange - I've probably been fooled several times - anyone else notice this?

One had to look for the bird in the oval stamp on the steerer to be sure. That Tange!
