I bought my '84 Schwinn World from Goodwill for $65, and by the time I got it on the road, I had another $222 into it. Will I ever get my money back if I sell it? No. Do I regret it? No. I enjoy rebuilding bikes as much as rebuilding cars and trucks. I'm retired so I have nothing to do after my naps.

Just mounted the Rene Herse tires and without a doubt the difference in feel and ride quality was quite pronounced as expected, even with a very short trip. Previously with the narrower and stiffer Panaracer vintage 28mm tires the bike felt awkward and the narrow 38 cm rando handlebars exacerbated the issue. Now however, even with those bars it was so much more rideable. The Nitto 48 cm Noodles are going to be very welcomed and should make the bike roadworthy. Not much room left for fenders but it looks as though 45mm will fit.


Next will be light grey Velox cotton handlebar tape, I find the black vinyl tape just does not look all that great.

My wife's father was and three of her brothers still are avid golfers. If she ever gives me a hard time about how much time and money I am spending on bikes, I just have to threaten to give it all up and start golfing.

Cost me a fortune for the upgrade below. No chance I'll ever see a monetary return. It is the same for the filet I cooked last month. Like butta. Then again, if you are doing this for a monetary reward, I think you are a fool. Just my .02.

Even though I most likely will not reuse the handlebar tape in favour of a darker grey I did wrap the original 38 cm and after a nice local ride of around 10 km or so found them to be reasonably comfortable but too narrow - barely 36 cm at the hoods. I also found myself having to move my hands lower in order fully take advantage of the braking, which is quite good actually, but not from the hoods. As much as I like these levers the modern Origin8 are a definite improvement, no doubt about it, so most likely another 70.00 odd dollars towards the Norco.


I just love the Rene Herse tires, the bike feels so much smoother and balanced, rides hands off quite easily and also manouvers very well. Trying to like the Vetta saddle but have a feeling that before too long there will be a leather one installed. The weather was sunny and warm, should last a few days and hopefully get some further riding in.




The same store and location the Norco was purchased from back in 1985 ( or thereabouts ). The main building is out of sight, this one is for repairs and parts.

Received the 48 cm Nitto Noodles and my initial thoughts were that they might be a bit too wide even though I was anticipating a noticeable difference. After installing them I went for a ride locally and have to say that although not quite as comfortable as the original V.O. rando bars certainly still good. I may tilt them upwards a bit more which will hopefully allow me to reduce the stem height. Once I have a Crane bell or equivalent mounted along with a front Berthoud bag it will be somewhat less noticeable. Ordered some khaki coloured tape in artificial leather that will look better as well. The light grey cotton allows them to stand out a bit too much. I certainly am enjoying the increased steering stability and a front bag should help further.


From how the bike responds it should still require minimum effort though may not ride hands free quite as readily. Might have to install a roller bearing headset if I get any shimmy. A Brooks B 17 looks to be in order as well, they certainly look better. Seems brown would go better with the handlebar tape.

Love this thread and the pics of the projects. Compared to my other hobbies, I find bike upgrading more logical as I can ride and enjoy the work. Do what you love and love what you do seems appropriate.

My money pit is in the parts collection stage: 1990(?) Cannondale SM600 frame and a very nice wheel 26" set pulled from a 98 Cannondale Super V 2000 that spent most of its life in storage without being used much, the rims blue toned Mavic X222 with an XT rear hub and a CODA front hub.

Ordered some khaki coloured handlebar tape but received the wrong one, more of a reddish brown but thought I would try it anyway as it was not expensive but still prefer a lighter honey.

With all the bike projects, builds and upgrades I have on the plate, I am not even counting how much money I have spent. I did and will do it because I like high end bikes.

VintageRide - are you running the Barlow Pass tires with tubes or tubeless? I presume tubed based on the original rims I see in the photos. What rims are those BTW? Have you measured the widths of the outside & inside of the rim at all? Just curious, also curious what tire pressures you are using.

masi61 - I only measured the outside width which is 23mm, the rims are made by Araya and using them with tubes and I would think the inside would be around 19 - 20mm. Currently have the tires at 40 pounds with no issues whatsoever and could reduce the pressure to 35. Mind you, I weigh around 150 at best so not that heavy. The bike rides very nicely and quite stable.

Finally installed the Berthoud front bag and Nitto M 12 rack, might still try and find some rando handlebars as well as leather tape but otherwise it is set up , just have to wait for some decent warmer weather. Although perhaps not considered a desirable brand the quality is very good and glad I purchased this one. It rides and handles a front load very well.

That's a highly cromulent composition. I'm a bit surprised that the rear tire seems to be so close to the seatstay bridge but still fits between the chainstays. Further back up the thread I think you had fender plans, but do you still?

Bicycles are a commodity here, even more so than other places in the world. So even if I made the coolest restored bike I could I would not make my money back. In fact, I probably lost money on the Gazelle Grand Tourist I sold a few years ago. But it did bring in a fairly decent chunk of money for another project so I was happy.
If I wanted to make a profit I should just buy cool bikes and ship them abroad on eBay or something. Even with €120 in shipping it is often still profitable to the buyer since bicycles tend to be more expensive elsewhere.

For me this hobby is about working on bikes and turning them into something I like. Something that I have resisted so far is using end-game components.
When I recently built a dynamo wheel I looked at a SON hub for €300 but I just couldn't justify it compared to €90 for one of the nicer Shimano offerings. Maybe one day.

Now, as soon as I start getting to the point of having the frame modified by a frame builder I stop. At that point I am probably better off getting a new bike that fits that purpose better.
