Time for new rims

I can’t believe I didn’t notice this with all the overhauling and polishing I’ve done.

Fair wear and tear is a sign that you have used it, nothing wrong with that.

I’m talking about the eyelet separating.

qcpmsame 12-06-23 11:34 AM

Looks like they all might be pllsening up and pulling out, either new rims or digging up a full set of the eyelets, seen some bulk eyelets on the web here lately.

Are those the type that can be re-done, or those rims that are shot when this separation occurs? What brand are the rims, btw ?

Semper Fi too!

Semper Fi Bill. Mavic G40 rims.

qcpmsame 12-06-23 11:49 AM

Now I notice the Mavic sticker, "Attention to details recruit." I can hear that one as if it was yesterday. I think I saw some Mavic eyelets on eBay, not sure which model they were for, or if the G40 can accept replacements. Are the rim holes elongatig or cracking?

I believe you are right about new rims in this case though. Last couple of times I looked for some, the prices seem to be all over the place.

I'd seek out new rims but I'd also ping those spokes and see if the tensions are even. If so, the nipples are still sitting on something solid and the spokes doing their job. And I'd just keep riding until the sidewalls got too thin, I saw cracks on the rim at the nipples or the spokes kept loosening. Unless of course, this bike is going to a show to be ogled.

Bike is a rider, the spokes are solid and I’ve been riding it. But, new rims are in the future. Once snow starts to fly I’ll be building a new set.

I just unlaced a beautiful set of G40s from a 1984 vintage Ross that came my way. I don’t ride narrow tires so I swapped in a NOS set of Super Champion 58s. The Mavics may be for sale this winter.

I found a nice set of G40 rims laced to a set of early Phil hubs on a donor bike that also had some very nice goodies , $100 for the entire bike. Last two times I needed decent vintage rims I ended up buying donor bikes because the rims I found were too much $$. The other bike was $50 and it had a set of Gentleman 81 Super Champion rims laced to Superbe High Flange hubs. Both sets cleaned up nicely. Both were 700c

Just re-seat them, the way you would a rivet. You know, get a hammer.

My OCD will not let me get a donor bike and leave it unbuilt. I’ll end up replacing the parts that I stole off it.

I trade or donate the frames and forks. The rest of the usable parts go for spares. It IS a way to get some really good parts and wheels. The $100 bike frame and fork with BB and headset got me a Brooks Team Pro saddle and a Campagnolo NR crank set! The second bike frame was just donated to bike co-op.
