The giant for $50 or the trek for $60

If you have a co-op nearby, you might want to take a look in their scrap pile before buying a rough looking frame for cash money.

$60 seems a bit pricey for a Chorus bottom bracket.

Neither jump out to me as a deal or a worthwhile project, but you are welcome the benefit of the doubt.

My vote is "C", none of the above. Not sure where you are but with the current state of the bike market 50/60 bucks will get you some solid complete "mechanic specials" if you exercise some patience. If you don't exercise patience you'll end up buried in projects...... :innocent:

Giant - would be worth about $50 as a complete bike. Maybe go for it if you love the frame and already have all the appropriate parts. If starting from scratch, start adding up what you’ll spend. It’ll hit a few hundred bucks quicker than you think and the frame just isn’t that nice.

Trek - no. Shame on someone for trying to get money for that frame.

I like the Giant.

I wouldn't touch that Trek with a ten-foot pole.

I agree with the others--look around and have some patience.

The Giant has interesting possibilities, but I wouldn't pay more than $30.

I could be wrong here, and please correct me if so, but isn’t that Trek frame one of those that was made of carbon tubes, glued into aluminum lugs? If so, why would one even consider building that up, with that type of repair?

If we *must* choose between the two frames, I vote for the Giant. At least the frame hasn't been severed.

I'd choose a frame to be named later.

I' d just stay away from that Trek.

I know you're doing a build and don't mind purchasing just a frame, but there are items on a complete bike that simply make doing a build easier/cheaper. Wheels, for one. Seatpost/headset are also nice to have at the very least. Brakes too, new pads is all one needs usually.

Unless you have a deep personal parts stash you don't mind pillaging for this build, basically what some people here are saying is that paying $50 for that Giant frame in rough condition is not the best idea since by waiting patiently you can get a full bike in nice condition for not much more. 90s road bikes are not in short supply. But, if you're planning a weird build with zero care for financial sense and have a bunch of parts ready to go...I'd say message the seller an offer of $30.

The giant is ~52cm ctc seat tube, and the Trek is ~55cm ctc. You sure you know what size fits you?

OP, where are you located? There are a few of us actually giving away frames and bikes that won't depart from under you as you pedal.
I have two Raleighs in what looks like your size, one is for free.
Seriously, that Trek is a nightmare. I'd rather go to a hardware store, get some ABS and make a bike frame than ride that Trek. Simply potentially dangerous.

The Giant looks fine to me. It should clean up nicely. Don't mind the snobs.
The Trek on the other hand- everyone else is right. That is in no way worth $60 with no fork. See if you can get the Chorus BB out.

Edit: Oh wait - hold on - I didn't realize you hadn't bought these frames yet. In that case skip and skip. The Giant Allegro might be fun to kick around for $30, if you already have the parts to finish it. But I would skip these.

Go with the Giant hes had it for over a year. Try and get it for 40.

Ah, yes thought it looked familiar. Not may favorite seller, all of the bikes seem to be a a premium compared to similar listings, ads stay up forever.

Trek - Run, don't walk (in the other direction)
Giant - Butted Cro-mo Taiwan built frame, 130mm rear, perfectly decent frame, price is not crazy, but as others have said, unless you have All the parts ready to go on this frame I would look for a complete bike. It is a buyers market, building this could quickly exceed the price of a nice, ready to ride complete, bike. I would keep an eye on the craigslist "are you looking" section - https://www.bikeforums.net/classic-v...t-ii-3315.html and see if you can find a complete bike, or if you really want the Giant and don't have them on hand, a donor bike for parts.

That Trek frame broke right where my 1971 American Eagle (Nishiki) Semi-Pro (Competition) did. I scrapped it at that point, after 20K years of ownership and about 45K miles on the road. (I weigh a bit under 150 lbs, so that was not an issue.)
