Love chrome frames. No pics of my old 1984 Mongoose ATB though.

Van, Thank you for posting this. I passed up an early eighties chrome Stumpy a while ago and I kick myself . It was tall like this and tall Mountain bikes are pretty hard to come by , much less chromies! You have that set perfectly.....FOR ME!!!! Sweet set up , Joe

Hey Whats wrong with "old man gearing"? You guys are killing me with your perfectly sized, beautifully rigged bikes! Is that a 32 tooth rear cog with a NR rear derailleur? It looks like the chainrings are half step? I have set a few up with 28 tooth rear and 53 / 41 chainrings but that's as far as I got. The walk of shame visits me regularly, Joe

You're welcome and Tx.

Seems like this was originally chrome but it has newer stick on decals and so far no one has ever seen a chrome one so its a bit odd.

I honestly haven't ridden it much but it rides very well, the bars are low for me and I put a stem riser extension on it that didn't help much and looks horrific so....... :twitchy:

I have a languishing big Stumpy frame that's very rough, looks like someone scraped on the paint with a screw driver, I may build it up just for fun but its really ugly so it would be a beater and deserves better.

When Schwinn introduced this Giant made Sierra in 1986, it you could get either Black Chrome or Red with White accents. I think I made the right choice. It is actually a tinted clear coating over the bare metal. I'm not sure what lies under the coating.

1986 Schwinn Sierra in Black Chrome. I put the original Schwinn labeled tires on for the picture before they disintegrated all the way.

I have never been a fan of plain silver all chrome bikes. Nothing against those who do like them, I just prefer some color with chrome trim.

Wow, never seen a chrome Stumpy, pretty sure they didn't sell them like that but never say never, I'll be kicking you from here. ;)

So any saved pics of it and was it a unibrow, stock biplane or ? fork.

The Ritchey came with the unibrow but pretty sure not original, it seems to be an early 80's, no s/n so may have had a really cool fork but we'll probably never know.:foo:
I could chrome the big Stumpy fork and/or the Ritchey designed crown MB-1 fork so I could move them around but again...... :twitchy:

;)

Absolutely nothing wrong! I'd rather ride up the hills than walk. It's an Ultra 6 14-32 from our friend @pastorbobnlnh, a Pat 72 NR derailleur, and 48/42 up front.

Well this is the encouragement I needed to go finish up my Pro Tour build.

I didn’t save any pics from the CL ad and I can’t remember the fork crown . I do remember that the chrome around the BB was a bit pitted but the rest was good. It was a couple of years ago and , although my mind is like a steel trap, the hinges are getting rusty!

Yep, no worries, I get it, same here.

The chrome on the BB of this is ok, not stellar, nor is the rest if you eagle eye it. :twitchy:

Yeah, it took me quite awhile to get there, over a month or more I think, had a couple false starts.

Dylansbob was working his way towards it as well, he was a ferry ride away that held him off a bit if I recall correctly.

The guy that had it had owned and sold JL Velo clothing for what he said was very crazy money, they were pretty well know and sponsored a couple of high level teams.

I also got 6 pair of the best shorts I own and had a heck of a good time talking with him. great guy and a good deal all said and done.

He had a bunch of cool bikes, we didn't spend much time on them but he also had a pair of custom show Klein's hanging on the wall of the media room, not my thing but they were very cool and pristine.

OK, a little outside the assignment, but I thought I'd toss them in.
I'm a sucker for bikes with cut-away aero seat tubes.
And in another ten years, ANY bike without electric pedal assist is going to be "classic".
Chrome paint, before it even started to get good.
