I have a wheel set I built decades ago with Mavic hookless 700C rims. I have always used wire bead tires. Are folding tires really more likely to present a greater hazard in case of a sudden deflation? (That seems to be the supposition in this discussion.)

In my old age I've come to prefer folders. I've found them to be easier to deal with but I certainly can't say that is a universal situation.

Zipp is making high end hookless rims, but you need tires specifically designed to be used with them. Everything old is new again.
https://www.bikeradar.com/features/h...-road-tubeless FWIW: all of my wheels/tires are clincher, and I plan to stick with clinchers and inner tubes for the foreseeable future. But it's nice to see more options for future upgrades given the push for tubeless these days. |
I am most definitely going to give folders a try. Gotta wait until payday, though. Bought three, make that four, bikes today. And I am trying to down size my bicycle collection.

I used to feel the same way but I'm largely indifferent to it know. I'll still run folding tires on a racing bike but other than that I'm largely indifferent to which tire to get.

Buying bikes is a terrible way to downsize your collection.
