Went For A Walk

I'll not go into why but I went for a rather long walk on Thursday. I notice today that I apparently used some of the vintage muscles differently than I do on the bikes. I'm thinking that it might be a worthwhile activity to incorporate into admittedly meager getting out kinda things.

Just a thot

For me, walking is a better recovery activity than cycling after a long/hard ride. And different, both mentally and physically.

I can ride 50 miles in a day no problem and have been able to for almost as long as I've been riding. I took up running about a year and a half ago and found that I could only run a few blocks before calling it quits. The variations of cardio are totally different experiences. Now I run about 3 miles a day, 4 or 5 days a week no problem.

Walking has kept me reasonably sane since I broke my wrist in a hard crash on the bike at the end of April.
It's gonna be a long recovery. The surgeon says it’ll probably be riding again by September.
Luckily, there are alot of nice trails to choose from nearby.

I augment running and modest resistance training with cycling. Find it very beneficial.

If you drive you miss seeing nearly everything. If you ride a bike you see a lot more. But if you walk and pay attention to things, you will see so much more and have the time to appreciate it.

I still walk behind the mower (commercial Toro) so that’s a good 2 hours or so a week plus a lot of “yard work”. Earlier this week I drove to Caledonia State Park then set out on the AT northbound with a 20# pack plus 4# of water. First backpacking in 30 years. Very enjoyable and I’m convinced my cycling muscles and cardio helped on those climbs. 10 miles north and net 1000 feet gain in elevation. Camped that night at Birch Run. Hob nobbed with the thru hikers. Marched southbound the next morning.

20 mountain miles and I sure was knackered by the time got back to the car. Took a day off then back on the bike. Now to think about if I want to do more backpacking.

I walk every other day, about four miles and ride the other days. It's a nice recovery and when I visit my mother in the nursing home I'm reminded that having the ability to walk is a big deal.

Bottom line and lesson learned, cross training is important!
I try to walk, lift, stretch and cycle.
All are complementary to best human body and mind health.

Matt, great photos as usual. You have an eye for great shots . I am sorry to hear of your injury. Hang in there , being off the bike ain’t no fun . My mental floss has been on hold twice before from injuries , one was a bike related injury , the best part of healing was getting back on my bike!
Back on point , walking in my neighborhood means climbing some pretty steep hills and when my wife and I do our “ loop ‘round the hood” it really works different muscles and gets my heart rate up. No stroll in the park.

I am 3 weeks into healing from a bike crash, just me, 2 broken ribs, 3 small fractures in my neck, and a severely bruised and strained right shoulder.
Two of the neck fractures, C1, were unstable, ER had me transported 120 miles, where I spent 24 hours in a trauma center with more tests, images, examinations and questions than I knew could be done in a 24 hour period. I was quite fortunate it was not considerably worse.
I started walking my neighbor the next day, now doing 3-4 miles daily, 2 walks. My legs were definitely feeling the change. I ride 5000 miles a year, but do not walk that much.
Strong legs from cycling have been an asset in every recovery I have been through, which includes 4 spinal surgeries. I like walking, but I like riding a bike a whole lot more.

Holy cow, delbiker1 that sounds scary. It sounds like you dodged a bullet as bad as it was though.
Glad to hear you are walking already. Best wishes to you for a full recovery.
polymorphself they are Merrill Barefoots. The only shoes I can put on by myself right now.

I wish you a speedy recovery. I'm on the injured list too.
