Is this a first gen Stumpjumper?
From a friend’s basement.
I don’t see a Tim Neeman sticker, or any sticker. he admits to swapping out the bars back in the day. https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...a9a703772.jpeg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...44bee20c2.jpeg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...a3fddeaa7.jpeg |
it has the flat plate fork crown. Might be 2nd year
VERY first would have been shipped with TA cranks and "bullmoose" stem / bar combo. I have a Nitto bullmose available /markp |
fork shows it is very early for sure
|
Presta valves? QR front axle? No Biopace? Guessing it's been considerably modded but the frame and some components seem period-adjacent at the least.
|
Agree that fork makes it an early model. Exage group was not out until 1987. Guessing that was likely swapped in at some point?
|
Here's a first gen 81, they had different graphics/livery, no biplane.
The biplane was used until 86. Neenan sticker very hit and miss. https://www.oldschoolracing.ch/mount...d-stumpjumper/ |
Are the Ground Control tires in decent shape?
|
As others have pointed out, the components are all later era. My Stumpy (purchased July 23, 1982) frame has only a single set of water bottle bosses and is welded, not lugged/brazed.

Looks like an 83'.
|
My friend said it came with the bullnose, but he removed it because his arms weren’t long enough so that’s why he swapped out the stem and handlebars.
