Schwinn Team?

Anyone familiar with a 'Schwinn Team' frameset? This just came up for sale locally, and I can't say it looks legit--but I'll probably try and take a look anyway.

Never heard of a Schwinn Team before. Curious if it has a date code on the head badge.

Looks to be from the late 80's or maybe early 90's. $100 seems like a good deal with a lugged steel frame, dual pivot caliper brakes, and two bottle cage spots. I wonder what the drive train is.

Local or "grassroots" sponsorship of some sort?

Nope.

curious as to what you find out! My guess, something made up.

Interesting. My guess is it may be a Team in decal only. Schwinn made Team BMX frames in the 70s and early 80s and the decal looks very similar. Let us know what you learn when you see it.

My guess: real, but weird

Hope someone knows the answer. Bike looks decent.

Is steerer tube .833 or 22.2? Schwinn stuck with heavy steerer tubes for a long time, requiring the unusual.833 stem.

I went to take a look--it's an odd decal set that has seen some age but doesn't seem right. sport-touring frameset with a 26.8mm seatpost. I have no reason to doubt it's a Schwinn, and based on the paint, dropouts, & seatpost cluster, it looks to be an '86 Prelude. The current owner says that the person he got it from raced--maybe this was a winter trainer.

SN begins B7, but I can't make out what's after that.

Here are a couple more pics:

Is there a 4 digit code on the headbadge?

edit - well, we posted that at the same time

Head badge stamp numbers would help. Don't think it is a '86 Prelude, they had the Columbus Tenax tubing.

Yeah the tubing sticker isn’t right for a Prelude, though the fork crown does look the part. Any pics of the dropouts?

I wouldn't trust the tubing sticker. I think all of these decals/stickers are very likely replaced at some point, perhaps early on. The tubing stickers are too old of a style for the frame. AFAIK, the 86/87 Prelude was the only schwinn with this particular seatpost cluster, esp. with the upslope to the bolt and concave treatments on the seat stays

Interesting, looks like a budget road bike from early to middle’90’s, when RX100 and Exage DT levers were still appearing on OEM spec sheets.

Might be from a Schwinn-buyout transition year, so poorly documented and made in smaller numbers than would be usual for an entry level “Schwinn”.

The decals most closely resemble a 1983 Schwinn le tour.

The serial number starting with B7 is a frame manufactured in February 1987.

As you have noted the frame looks very much like a Prelude model.

Edit: The serial number is from Greenville, Mississippi.

The quality of the lugwork looks pretty good. Really clean, from what I could see. Could it be Japan made?
