Derailleur hanger replace

Hey All,

I have a 1972 PX10 where someone cut off the derailleur hangar and replaced it with a claw presumably because the hangar was not threaded. I am looking for someone who can low temp braze a new hangar onto the dropout. I was up in Wisconsin at Yellow Jersey bikes and he said he has been doing it for years. Anyone know of anybody that can do this in the Indianapolis area? I've had the bike since 1983 and rode it for 35 years. Decided to do more work on it and just finished putting on period campy components since all the french ones were gone (except for the headset and BB) when I bought the frame. I had a reply on CABE where someone on this forum who lives in Bloomington, IN may be able to do this, but I do not know who it is.

Thanks in advance.

Do you know of anyone in your neck of the woods that can handle this?

I seem to remember from reading past posts that Murray Missile might be in that general area, too.

I've done this repair several times, but shipping back and forth between you and Portland Oregon wouldn't be cost effective.

Doug Fattic is a framebuilder in Niles, Michigan, and contributes to this forum often. He also teaches framebuilding classes.

I have felt guilty about tapping so many of those hangers, I'm just glad I never cut any of them off.

Same thing happened to my PX-10. Here it is after gugie repaired it.

The donor dropout was also Simplex, but I guess this isn't the style the original would have had. The good thing about needing a replacement is that it gives you options.

So you run simplex derailleurs? I guess there are some hurets that would also work.

If any of you followed my Basso Loto thread you will remember that I had the right side rear DO re-welded and then did some finishing work with a Dremel tool. The low temp brazing is not in my wheelhouse right now. Back in the mid 80's we had the torches and jigs for frame building and often would replace the entire DO. But I don' have those torches anymore. If a lower section can be sourced I suspect we might be able to weld it on the frame. I know Harry Havnoonian still will sell some frame supplies and is an E-Bay store under HHbicycles. Lemme know about a possible re-weld o the DO. Smiles, MH

I'm straight up US 31 from Indy and just over the state line in Niles, Michigan. I think I'm about 150 miles away. I can harvest a dropout hanger from dropouts I have and braze it onto the bottom of your dropout. It can be done while you wait at least a couple of hours. Timing to meet may be difficult because I'm often busy doing many things. PM me and we can explore this option more if you want. It won't work if I have to do any shipping. It takes me too much time to pack and then I have to run the frame down to South Bend to ship it off and the whole afternoon is lost. I'm just not set up to efficiently pack and ship frames and it is really expensive to ship now too. I learned how to build and paint frames in the UK in 1975. I would roughly calculate that harvesting a hanger, prepping the 2 for brazing and clean up afterward (mostly file work) would take me somewhere close to 3 hours. So you might want to think if that expense is worth it. Ordinarily no - except when the frame has sentimental value and in which case it is well worth it.

Good on ya Doug! I thought about sending him to you but as you are working for the Ukrainian people I was hesitant. How is that project going? Smiles, MH

Kelpie3,
I got to spend an afternoon hanging about a shop getting my derailleur hangar welded. I highly recommend it, drive included.

Theres a video on Youtube somewhere , of an older Italian guy Stick Welding a derailluer Hanger on a Colnago , yes a stick welder . (i couldnt find it)

Ive rewelded missing and cracked Hangers several times with good results , Its not too complicated . I used a Mig welder and preheated the dropouts .

Practice on a crappy frame first , cut it off ,bevel grind it and reweld it . I bent the entire dropout before the weld cracked . Its fairly easy .

I am, but I forgot that the picture above was mid-job. The next one showed it threaded.

Doug,

This sounds like a plan to me. I can make a road trip out of it, and also have a sister in Michigan and maybe we can drop by on the way up or back for a little diversion. I bought this frameset back in 1983 and have well over 40,000 miles on it. It's worth it for me to fix it. PM me on the cost.
