Identify a freewheel please!
Anyone have any idea what freewheel this is? It seems to resemble a Taiwanese Falcon, but I don’t remember those having 7 speeds?
It is attached to a Mavic 550 hub. https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...a2a119c4e1.png |
It is not the best picture. I know, it is not your picture but one that someone posted on eBay to sell it. So you don't have control over that. It used to be that sellers would provide more details. That seems to have faded away. A couple of crappy pictures is all you get now. I thought Falcon had 7 speed freewheels.

Let us know what you do find?) |

Think what we got here is an 8 speed freehub rather than a freewheel.

Here are some more pics. https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...2ab8a912b7.jpg Definitely doesn't have the 571 logo https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...6eb16ee52c.jpg Very much looks 550ish https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...47b77254bb.jpg It's partner https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...6560e692ea.jpg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...8a91a3323d.jpg Why I bought them I am truly surprised. I should have looked harder. Falcon DOES have a 7 speed. https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...63c0bff73.jpeg But it doesn't really look like the cogset pictured either. Hope you are right. That would be cool! |

I kind of aagree about it being a shipmano 7spd HG. It's a real lousy pic though

Definitely a 7-speed freewheel. Those Asian clusters are a bit of a blessing, really. They are of passably decent quality, cheap as dirt, and keep many an older bike rolling happily along.
|
It is either a modern day Shimano or a Falcon based on the sloped cogs and lock ring. The Falcon ones are a cheap knockoff of Shimano. Based on the quality of the wheel, I doubt it was made by Falcon. Both useva standard Shimano removal tool, which is the most common freewheel removal tool for anything made from 1990s-modern day.

One more vote for a freewheel and not a cassette. Sunrace also makes freewheels that look very similar.
Tubular wheelset! :D :thumb: |

Tubular wheelset! :D :thumb: Based on a closer look, the cogs seem to have that Sunrace finish to them. Though the ones I have seen with a lockring tend to be iron colored or have an iron-black first cog. |
Mystery solved. It is, in fact, a Shimano freewheel. XJ model made in Singapore as John surmised above. Interesting. Since this will be going on a AD Superleicht with Suntour Superbe stuff otherwise, will have to swap it for a Sachs freewheel!
Tires are Graphene Corsa Control and do not look used at all, really. So, Ambrosio Durex Super Pro rims Mavic 550/501 hubs with the correct skewers Vittoria Corsa Control tubulars already installed Now disposable XJ Freewheel For $80 plus $50 shipping. I think that was a decent deal. |
