As for the 28/2, there's a bit of edge distortion there. I think the Tamron 28/2.5 is slightly better optically corrected, but I still haven't done enough with the Kiron to be fully informed. Contrast, and center sharpness shown in the Kiron samples above are indeed excellent. -D.S. |

My youngest (30 next month) has been exploring photography for a few years and is gently nagging me to let him try my medium format cameras. I pulled my 1000F out to check it's workability (a few fussy bits, normal stuff for a roughly 70-year old camera) and felt tension when I turned the film winder. Turns out there was a roll of Vericolor HC in it. There's a lab 4 blocks south of my office, I'm about to walk over and drop it off for developing.

I just can't come to terms with firing up my old Mamiya 645 anymore. Even with Velvia being available for it. I even picked up a holder for the 120 filmstrips so that I could use my old lightbox and digital camera to digitize my old shots from it. Still seems like the digital shots out of either my Canon 5DsR or the Leica SL2 give me a better image. Still, I have been contemplating getting some film and taking it out. Maybe I'll do that next year when I start road tripping throughout the western backroads.

A family friend was a pro, shooting weddings and events. She was a huge inspiration. I learned B&W printing at her house when I was maybe 10-11 years old, and she gifted me a full darkroom setup when I turned 13. I bought a 1000F from her when I was 16, at the same time I bought my first high-end bike. Hasselblads are like licorice, you either love them or avoid them. Our pro friend didn't like it, so it was pretty much NOS when I bought it. From the first roll of film it was magically intuitive in my hands and opened up my sense of visual expression and composition. It was stolen in the mid-70s, and I replaced it with this one in the late 70s. My wife has a 500C from back in the day. If we had 5 figures (each) to drop we'd buy digital backs for them. |
Iʻve been eagerly following this thread and can post something now.
Been into vintage bikes almost 20 years, got into film cameras a few years ago when an inheritance arrived. Have had luck thrifting, picked up an XE-7 and shot a b&w Ilford 400 (IIRC) roll using an auto flash with minimal results. Also figured out after the fact that the aperture blades were oily and stuck wide open, working on cleaning the lens now. The inherited OM-1 shot most of the photos I had growing up, and Iʻm using it now with my own little. Super rewarding. I’ve got a thing for old, nothing fancy rangefinders (and Thomas McGuane novels). The Yashica Electro 35 was inherited (closet find), the others acquired. The ME1 is very light and often comes along on backpacking trips. Fits in a hip pocket just right. Nikon is just plain reliable, and the Soviet Leica knockoff could use some fiddling.

My 52-53 Leica IIf most possibly upgraded by factory later. My neighbor (old guy in his late 70s or early 80s) was cleaning his garage and gave me tools and such saying take it or I throw them away. He held a plastic bag in his habd and I saw a Leica book in it and asked if I can have a look at it. Once gave the book bag he threw it back in the bag gave the bag to me and said take it or goes to dump. I almost fainted seeing the camera and other accessories in it. Told him I cant take it, don't be fool man this is valuable stuff, I can help to sell, but he was adamant that he asked around shops and no one wants a film camera. So I got it. Its really a "schmuckstück" (a jewellery piece).

They're a little complicated to use because so many things are controlled individually. Film loads after popping off the base plate where, hopefully a take-up spool awaits for attaching the film tail. You wind the advance knob to feed film and cock the shutter, then set the shot counter to 0. Shutter speed is set on top, plus in front for 1/30 second and slower. Aperture is set on the lens. Do that either guessing your exposure or using a handheld light meter. Focus using the left rangefinder window and frame using the right finder window. Take a deep breath and press the shutter button. That's it! Repeat for the rest of the roll, flip the rewind lever to R then wind the film back into the cassette using the top left knob. Wonder what happened to all the 1-hour developing shops. Isn't that easy? (Or do what I do and admire it during the occasional cleaning.) Cheers, Rick |
