Aide for dating frame
Hello, I received this framework from France about a year ago. It has no bumps, it just missed the stickers. I would have the impression that it may have been repainted. He missed the stickers on the seat tube and the Peugeot name on the diagonal tube. Can someone help me approximate to date this frame? I saw photos in catalogs, there I can't see the original stickers very well, I believe it's a PLX 10 from 1954. Here are some pictures when he arrived. I would also be extremely grateful for your help with the original parts to assemble. Thx

Can you post a drive side picture of the entire frame?

A Stronglight Competition 54 or 55 crankset with a set of rings, probably 52/48, maybe as wide as 52/42 if you can find them, is what you're going for. The front derailleur tab may be for a "suicide" rod shifter. Simplex, Huret, and Cyclo made them. You've got Simplex dropouts, so a Simplex TdF rear derailleur, probably 4 speed, is what you might be looking for. The Simplex Competition front derailleur may be a bit harder to find, and may cost you more than you paid for the frame, but they are very worth the expense once you get your restoration done.

I can only guess (wish I had more definitive tools to help) but I think "1954 PX-10" is an excellent "ballpark" to start in!
Even better to finish there with a "home run" restoration, this frame deserves one |

I have no real help except to say make it so, a Peugeot this old is about as cool as it gets if you can get there. ;) One big tell can be the oil port on the BB, find out when it was discontinued and that will tell you the latest it was made. |

Here's one from 1954, a PX-10. Has the bracket for the front rod derailleur, and a similar rear derailleur bracket, but the dropouts are entirely different, stamped, not forged like yours. Also, yours has a different (later) headbadge. So, yours may be a later 50's model.

the OP's dropouts are clearly different to those on the 1954 example (which are certainly stamped from plate) but like some other Simplex DOs I have seen, they appear to have features that look both like forgings AND stamping was involved. Such as the RD hanger on the OP's RH dropout: can't tell what tooling Simplex may have used to get that shape.
But whatever, it will be a major clue in getting to a positive year-made ID. Best of luck and I will keep watching for our more knowledgeable experts to chime in! |
interesting that the '54 has what looks like the "Full set" 531 tubing decal, while the OP's (possibly a later decade '50s frame) used Vitus (3-main-tube) tubing, Could it be a model a step down from PX-10?

I saw a lesser Peugeot from 1958 that looked remarkably similar to your PX-10, so I think mid-to-late 1950s nails the vintage pretty well.
I am not at all a fan of those 1950s derailleurs, but the frame is great. Similarly, brake calipers from that era pale by modern standards. You definitely want a set of TA or Stronglight cranks and rings. :) |
