Absolute cream puff of a Fuji
 

I spent several weeks staring at this on FB before I decided to look at it. The frame appears to be 62cm and I told myself 63 is my minimum. What’s 1 centimeter difference? I don’t know but my OCD is substantial it seems. Anyway, when I finally made the trip through a very nice neighborhood I was greeted by an older man who was retiring. The guy was the original owner and claimed “I believe I only put 17 miles on it but the battery in the odometer (wired) died. I haven’t been on it since and everything is original.” There’s no reason for me to think this guy was fibbing. I’ve never seen an old bike this clean. I haven’t even washed the fine layer of dust off and it’s pretty apparent the 17 mile claim could very well be true. The frame I consider just slightly undersized but the stem is long and the reach is good. $150….

Which is why I don’t mind good quality 27” rims. Fit to take 32mm 😉

The sport-touring bikes of the later 70's through early eighties were the endurance/gravel bikes of their day (popular bikes having by now come full-circle).

I was "bombing" the local singletrak in the American River Canyon on my 1980 Raleigh Grand Prix this past weekend, enjoying the supple traction offered by (actual) 31mm-wide 1-1/4" Pasela tires at 50psi on 19mm internal width Araya rims. It all made for amazing versatility, even as I had to descend the steeper, chunkier trails at near-trackstand speeds (luckily I am good at track-stands). Climbing those same steep trails out required committed aggression with a mere 40/32t low gear, which I found challenging in a good way. Only the bike's rather high top tube was an impediment, while the bike's safety/auxiliary brake levers OTOH helped keep me from going over the bars.

Nice find! Count me among the masses who have put wider meats on their vintage Fuji and use it for all-day trail and MUP riding.

What's not to like about an exceptionally clean vintage Fuji? They're classic bikes. There is a very clean Fuji S10S going for short money near me. I've been hoping someone else would buy it but no luck so far. I may end up having to buy it.

Sadly unless you are selling a full blown Italian, older road bikes are tricky to get more than $100 out of around here. Good for us I guess.
