Vintage-Trek.com down
Hopefully this is a temporary issue. Anyone know who manages this? It would be terrible to lose this resource.
https://www.vintage-trek.com/cgi-sys/suspendedpage.cgi |
I just noticed this as well. The domain is registered until 2027, so it's not that.
I can say, first hand, that even TREK sends people there fairly regularly, as I've worked with Trek support on tracking down bike vintages or special release bikes. So, it is, absolutely, an important site for those of us who like the elder products of Waterloo! I tried to reach out to the owner of the site. Sadly, the form only allows you to say that you want to chat, it doesn't let you send any sort of message. Here's hoping. I'd gladly toss some pennies into a hat to keep the site alive. I'm sure I'm not alone! --anthony |
AI, for what it's worth, says the site owner is Larry Black, of Mt. Airy (MD) Bicycles fame.
I don't recall him being on BF, but he was, and i assume is, active on CR. EDIT: did not find his name on the new CR Google list EDIT2: I did see he is on FB, but I can't tell if he's active with the CR group on there. |
Larry is old school. I'd recommend calling him at his shop, Mount Airy Bicycles.

I think there was a thread here or there regarding the vintage trek pages going somewhere for safekeeping and posterity.
|
On the off-chance that what you were after was the component dates page, here's a recent archive:

Bad timing for me, as I just got a '78 TX700 from Robvolz . But I had the 1977 catalog saved to my phone anyway.
If anyone needs them in the meantime, I probably have all the early catalog PDFs in my phone downloads. It would be a big loss to lose the serial number list though |
Correct, the site has been down before and our guts all collectively sank. It came back though. Hopefully it will again. An amazing resource for Trek fans and just vintage parts people as well.
|
Ouch. jPrichard, does your phone have the '91 catalog by any chance? (The version at vintagetrek.com had only a few pages, but one was the page I need.) Thanks.

I saved the HTML page regarding serial numbers the last time the website re-appeared. I tried to post this as a PDF and failed, so here are jpgs.

I wish we had a sticky for catalogs and info like this from the vintage Trek website
|
You can also still access MUCH (not all) of the vintage Trek site via the way back machine. You may need to try a couple different dates to find the pages you want.
I need to reach out to the site owner and see what's going on. I'd hate to lose this resource! |

Thanks to Riddle of Steel https://www.bikeforums.net/classic-v...t-w-links.html The Trek 1 and Trek 2 links don't work ( likely point to vintage-trek.com) but the Trek 3 link has catalog PDFs Trek 4 covers the Serial numbers from the Wayback machine. |

Edit: my mistake, it is a sticky which is great. |
I use the Wayback Machine for things like this. I had to use it to obtain a model name from a serial number after visiting a coop last week. It worked!
|
Got it, thanks! (Downloading that baby for local archiving.)

I rather obviously missed that in my earlier post. |

I really wish the vintage-trek website was still up... It’s like losing a volume from a set of encyclopedias.

Is there any possibility that BikeForums could take ownership of this site? If there was a fund for purchasing and maintenance, I would contribute to it. This site, and others that seem to be in jeopardy, are important resources that deserve preservation.
Thanks to everyone here that have already made great efforts to keep the information available. |
