Hello!

I have what I believe to be a 1972 PX10, but in the process of figuring that out I came across a lot of posts where an owner thought it was a PX10, but it turned out not to be. I’m 99% sure this one is legit, but I want to be sure.

PX10 its legit. Nice bike! The real giveaway is the half chrome stays and full 531DB frame.

Were the foil headbadges in use that early? I had one on my '78 and thought they used metal or plastic ones before that.

I am still sorting that out. I think would like to keep it relatively period correct, but im not worried if there are mismatched parts. Everything is dictated by French sizing, though.

I definitely plan to add Mafac Racers because I think they look good and I generally like center pull brakes. I have a set but I’m missing the stops and straddle wire hangers. I might just buy a complete set on eBay.

Aside from that, I originally wanted to replace the bars with Guidons Philippe bars, but I am not so sure at this point. I found the stem to be 22.2 which would indicate someone might have made some mods to the headset locknut. Might just leave the one on and find some other bars I like.

Drivetrain wise, it has a Sachs rear derailleur and Compag front. I am 50/50 on replacing any of it. I do I have a really nice Suntour Superbe rear, but we will see. I don’t recall if the old French stuff had a different hanger size. I love Stronglight stuff so the cranks aren’t going anywhere. I also have noodle legs and I live in Seattle so I’m going to stick with the freewheel that is on there.

The cages and straps will probably have to go. It kind of bums me out because I really like the classic look of them, but I have bad feet and they generally cause pain. It would be cool to find some Lyotard platforms.

Mafacs are excellent brakes. The Competitions are really lovely but the Racers work almost as well. But choose levers that fit your hands. I use Nuovo Record levers by choice.

It’s more likely that the lower part of the stem has been sanded down to a 22.0 size. That is a pretty common modification, so it should be no problem to find a French stem and bars.

The Simplex derailleur hanger if original would have an unthreaded hole with no obvious stops. If it’s been modified show us a pic so we can advise.

I’ve a pair of Lyotard platforms that I’d be willing to at least let you try. Unfortunately I’m in Merrie England now on our way to France. Back late Dec. Are you patient?

As for the derailleur, someone has modified the hanger and threaded it. It’s unfortunate, but I have found more egregious modifications on the internet.

That is a well done modification. You could easily use a Simplex rear derailleur if you want. The Simplex rears, even the Delrin ones, work well; it’s best to use something else in front.

IMO threading and modding the Simplex dropout is perfectly appropriate if you intend to ride your PX 10. (Full disclosure - my 1974 LE has a modded dropout and a Suntour Superbe Pro rear mech).

I realize there are people that love Simplex mechs, but as others have said, those mods do not prevent reversion to Simplex.

Some like Delrin and its inherent smoothness, but I'm not a fan of the way it flexes under load.

Yeah, agree with what others have said about that being a well-done derailleur-hanger modification. The worst is when the whole hanger just gets haggled off with a hacksaw.

Even though a butchered derailleur hanger is a terrible thing, there's an upside to taking possession of a bike has already been despoiled that way--it lets you use any derailleur you want without bearing any moral stigma.

Haha, I have seen the hacksaw mods and am glad this one isn’t as drastic.

I agree that the job on this one is clean, and ultimately I think it’s for the best from a functionality standpoint. Sometimes I get hung up on the idea of keeping things original and unchanged, but this gives me more options.

Finished most of the work I am going to do to it. I will need to make some brake adjustments and stuff, but it seem mostly rideable. it’s mostly the same, just swapped brakes, saddle, bars, and stem.

The one thing I am not super happy with is the modification made to fit a 22.2 stem is that it allows the stem move forward under force and it clunks against the lock ring(headset bearing adjustment is correct, I can physically see the stem move forward and back).

I am not sure if it’s a safety issue, but it’s really annoying. I have some nice Nitto bars and stem I might swap but tha will mean a lot of work. Anyway, here are some photos.

Nice work so far. What headset do you have on the bike now? I have some Stronglight headsets that I think are complete (I tend to jumble things around . . . .) and you might see if those tighten up the stem properly.

That seems a bit odd ? Even if ''modified'' I dont see how it would do that ?

I am not sure. It’s based on a preliminary examination, haven’t really jumped into it too far. I am going to pull the bars and put a 22.2 stem in and see what it looks like. I suppose if something else is loose in the headset some where, but everything seem pretty tight.

As it should be. :-) But if the headset has been modified, perhaps one of mine can tighten up the fit.
