Frame work in Phoenix, AZ

Does anybody know of a shop in Phoenix that can do basic frame alterations? I just want to put dimples in the chainstays of an old Trek, but it's a 910 Columbus frame so not something I'd want to experiment on myself.

Andy Gilmour in Tucson should be your guy or may be able to recommend someone in Phoenix.

He's been doing it a long time. ;)

He's on FB

^ Beat me to it. Andy did a great job for me last year.

Thanks, I'm aware of Mr. Gilmour although I don't know him personally. This alteration is not a high enough priority to justify taking a day off to drive to Tucson (probably twice for drop off and pickup) so I most likely won't do it unless I can find somebody local.

It used to be there were a couple well-regarded local options. But Colin Laing and Karl Hoff have gone to that great tube-bending in the beyond, and I can't think of anyone offhand currently building or performing frame repair in the Valley.

The above are excellent recommendations and Andy doesodd work outside typical framebuilding. Why would you want to dimple a stay? I know dimpling is done to strengthen sheet metal but I can not imagine denting a chain stay on purpose.

I want to have a little more room for 35mm tires. It currently has 35mm tires, but the clearance is so tight that I would probably be immobilized if I broke a spoke while riding. Not ideal for a bike that I want to use for overnights.

Dimples for more tire space are extremely common for 70's and 80s sport-tourers, even on higher end bikes. I'm kind of surprised this 1979 Trek does not have dimples.

"Frame work" is a dying profession. There was no one in the greater Chicagoland area who could braze on some bottle bosses. I had to ship.

I suspect if you need frame work done, you will need to ship the frame unless you are lucky.

mhespenheide 01-27-26 12:39 PM

I bet Andy Gilmour could do it in a day if you set it up in advance. If you end up needing to ship it, our own gugie does excellent work in Portland OR.

I ended up shipping the frame to Andy Gilmour, then he delivered it to me in person at the Tucson bike swap. He did a nice job at a very reasonable price, would recommend. I might have him dimple some more old frames for larger tires since I have a storage unit full of them.

He said he could have done it same day as mhespenheide suggested, but I was only planning to be in town on the Sunday of the bike swap so that would not have worked.

I haven't been here in awhile. For your next project you might want to check out Andrew Cooper. He aligned some forks for me before.
