Talk me out of it...

This frame just came up for sale, it's a Japanese Pegasus randonneur bike. Pegasus are a pretty well known maker of high-end bikes, this one features internal cable routing, a pump mount, and braze-ons on the chain stay for spare spokes. I need another bike like I need another bout with COVID, but I have already have most of the parts to make it a complete bike.

Frame looks spiffy!

If what's laying about can be put to good use and you're so inclined, I'd say go for it!

Please post pics here once you're satisfied with the result!

jamesdak 02-03-26 08:12 AM

You only live once, go for it!

ascherer 02-03-26 08:29 AM

Why on earth would we do that? Buy the bike, eat the dessert.

non-fixie 02-03-26 08:45 AM

That is beautiful. I'd want that. Very, very much.

Sorry. :o

daverup 02-03-26 08:47 AM

I think he should buy it so the rest of us can find out if it's any good.

Steel Charlie 02-03-26 09:00 AM

Is it the right size ? Or do you just need to buy something ?

Chuckk 02-03-26 09:03 AM

Doesn't the shoulder brace on the seat tube imply classic CX?
Should make a great randonneur.

bwilli88 02-03-26 09:56 AM

That looks super, What is the build plan?
Vintage or restomod?
Drop bar or upright?
What size wheel and tire is it capable of using?

Classtime 02-03-26 09:57 AM

It only has one pair of bottle bosses. :(

"Talk me out of it..."

...pretty difficult - especially if folks on the forum are willing to buy it for more than you pay.

  • Might help if your run a string around it and find it has been bent.
  • Vertical dropouts - need to be perfect. Are they?
  • No front derailleur mount.
  • Probably limited to a 5- or 6-speed cog,
  • Agree with the one set of bottle bosses complaint, though that's what jersey pockets were made for. (And if you're going to repaint, go ahead and throw 2 or 3 more sets of bosses and a front derailleur mount.)
  • Sloppy cantilever brakes.
  • If you're used to stiffer frames, even in this smaller size, the chainstay whip might be annoying.
  • Too much rust inside(?).
  • Time you spend fixing it up will not increase your time on the road..., well unless it rides as well as it looks.

OK - I give up. I really like it. One of the nice lugless frames. Be careful and have fun with this.

The color will clash with your favorite cycling outfit!

rando_couche 02-03-26 10:53 AM

It's not blue. Sorry, that's all I got.

As former C&V stalwart @bigbossman would say: "You'd be foolish not to. They're practically giving it away." Seriously, that's what he would, and did, say. More than once.

And coming here, home of the biggest collection of C&V enablers on the planet, looking for people to talk you out of buying a cool frame . . . well, we both know that ain't happenin'. ;)

Yes, true. However, it appears to be fillet brazed rather than tig welded. And that burgundy paint color is nice.

It is for shouldering the bike when cyclo-muletier:

Those aren't really bike mules, mules are self-powered

rumrunn6 02-03-26 01:20 PM

you're asking a bunch of addicts if you should have more :innocent:

VRJAKE 02-03-26 01:55 PM

What will it replace or supersede? One in, one out?

gearbasher 02-03-26 01:58 PM

If you use the pump pegs, your pump is going to get filthy. So, don't buy it.

Yes and no, on a serious tourer/randonneur like this, portaging is always taken into account.

The Japanese were far more serious about this than many know.

They excelled at these and we rarely see it as they are very coveted, cherished and held onto.

noglider 02-03-26 03:01 PM

Don't buy it. Instead, buy a frame without internal cable routing.

Asking for us to talk you out of it is like holding an AA meeting at a bar.

jdawginsc 02-03-26 03:22 PM

I am going to bring this conversation back to sanity.

Buy it. You'll regret not buying it more than buying it. Then ride all seven continents.

You must be joking, these are exquisite.

Buy! Buy! Buy! :roflmao2:

Get to it and make it so, these rarely come up at all.
