raleigh super record

Anyone know about these? I bought one the other day for $65 for a friend off of an original owner. It rides quite nicely, but it's in horrible shape. The owner had it exposed to salty sea air, I think, and I see some amount of rust and pitting to the paint, though not too much. I'm going to take it apart, clean it up and switch it over to alloy rims. But I'm wondering if there is away of addressing the oxidation with some kind of a light bath, other than having to use naval jelly on every little corroded area (most of the oxidation is fairly light, but it's all over the frame.) These are decent frames, though, no?

Info: lightly ridden, original wheels and tires (rusted away!), Raleigh deraillers/components, weinmann centerpull brakes with original, intact weinmann salmon brake pads, lightly worn.

Is it worth swapping out centerpull canti brakes for newer dual pivots or even sidepulls?

thanks for any info, as always.

I have an early 70's Record, and it is a very nice steel frame. Not the lightest in the world, but with alloy rims and an upgraded crank, it weighs in at 28#. A great townie.

Are you referring to corrosion on the steel surfaces, or the alloy? Personally, I haven't had great success with Naval Jelly.

I think centerpull brakes perform well… I’d vote to give them a chance. Plus, they’re already on the bike!

Corrosion's on the steel, causing some areas of the paint to bubble a bit.

I myself have a Grand Prix, and I upgraded the cottered cranks on that. This one has cotterless cranks, so I'm thinking that maybe it's a bit younger than mine. Did they manufacture these into the 80s?
