Broken super record derailleur
 

I asked this question earlier in the mechanics' section - perhaps they're all too young to know what a super record derailleur is...

Here's the deal. I have a nearly new super record with a broken front face plate. I have a beater with a pretty good face plate. Should be able to make one good one and have some nice spare parts. Has anyone ever extracted the pins that hold the derailleur together? How'dja do it?

Grind the end of the pin enough to drive it out with the right size pin drift. Campagnolo used to make replacement pins, part # 808/A. Not sure where you can find 'em now though...

ummm. sounds tricky to grind w/o grinding off the black...when you drive the replacement pin in do you spread the end somehow?

Oh, just throw that junk away and put a Simplex Prestige on.

Use a small, round carbide burr in a Dremel. you won't even touch the black bits if you're careful. Try a shot of your favorite whatever first, and your hands be as steady as a brain surgeon's;)

What vintage of Super Record? There are differences, plus the donor part will have to be from the same vintage, by that I mean the same assembly process, alloy pins or stainless pins, can't mix & match parts. Well easily anyway, Art Stump could do it but not many have the skill or tools required.

They are both second gen; the broken one has the spring bolt come in from the top side of the derailleur, and the crappy one is one of the last that they made with steel pivot bolts, etc. But the face plate (parallogram arm?) looks to be exactly the same in either case. I'm not Art Stump, but I live down the street from Art the second, guy has a state of the art machine shop in his basement. Should I ask him to do it?

Nah; do it yourself. "where there's a will..." If you're careful, and have some sharp drill bits & a Makita (or similar), you can drill the heads of the pins off. I think your biggest obstical would be in finding new pins or material to make some.

To control the aesthetics, drill the the pin out from the back side pushing them forward, a good hardware store, even OSH will have the pin drift you need, for the stainless pins, drill them first with an undersize drill, say .090 or 3/32" then cut the flare with a small countersink, then drive. for pins you could use some stainless drill rod or even a clevis pin, which will require machining to fit well, used cir-clips once as used by Mavic on the "Erector set units", what a cool looking unit...

Aren't those sweet? One of my favorites; all derailleurs should be built as nicely.

and very pricey. I have a Vitus that is slowly turning into a Mavic-equipped bike, but that SSC derailleur is always just outta reach. I have a dremel and some burrs - I'll set to work on this soon (gotta see if the LBS has some pins...)

Have seen the pins on ebay but you might wait quite a while for them to come up again, also have got complete SR rears in NICE condition for $40-50.

but, um...it's the challenge of the unknown! and the broken one is basically new old stock, so it'd be really cool if I got it together.
