I picked up an old Schwinn SS this evening rather cheap, maybe not cheap enough. There is rust all around the lugs, paint flaking off and somewhat pitted as if the tubes held water for the longest time, hopefully its all outside.
The badge says "Schwinn Chicago", number on it is "0297", by looking around this forum, I am assuming its a 1987 bike.
It has Shimano 600 components, including the sealed headset, brakes, hubs, cranks, shifters, hand brake levers and Mavic 700c rims. The drop bars and stem are 3TTT, the stem is 5.5" long.
This bike weighs roughly 24 lbs, I have a crappy scale, could be a pound or two off.
The frame is 23", 2" too tall for me and I was never a fan of Schwinn as far as I can remember in my kiddy years, always thought they were overrated and super heavy, but this one is so light and I couldnt pass on the deal.
What is normally done in restoring the frame? Can it or should it be sand blasted and if so , how do you protect the threading in the BB? Also, is this bike worth restoring? Or, should I just use the components for another bike??

These are nice riding bikes (I had an '86), but probably not worth restoring. If you want to determine that the rust is not fatal (to the frame or you) and rattle-can it just to ride, you can't go wrong, but don't throw a $200 and up paint job on a $250 tops bike.
