The LBS has a 70's Paramount for sale. Chrome lugs, Nuevo Record Derailleurs, All other components Campy. Near perfect condition all around. Brooks B17 saddle. I could probably get it for $500.00. Worth it?

A '71 P13-9, 22" frame in near perfect condition went for $1,150 a few days ago on eBay (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...tem=6561522314). At $500, it's a real bargain if it's in nearly as good shape as you say. Grab it!

Paramount is the most "worthy" Schwinn you're likely to find. Lots of folks who knew Schwinn in their golden years, remember the Paramount as the one to have. While you can find a better bike, Paramounts are pretty darn nice. Chromed Nervex Pro lugs, butted Reynolds 531, Campagnolo Record group and Cinelli bar & stem make for quite a beautiful classic!

Here's my '71 P13-9. I'm pretty sure it will be my main ride 'til I kick the bucket.

I recently recovered a Peugeot UO8 mixte that I foolishly left in my driveway one night, along with a girls Schwinn (good thing it's pink; the theif didn't want it). By the time I remembered that I'd left the bikes out after a ride with my daughters, the Peugeot was gone... Funny thing was, I spotted it a week later being ridden down a local street by a young guy who didn't speak any English (or pretended not to). He actually stopped when I pulled over a few yards in front of him, and holding onto the handlebars and shouting that he's on my bike that was stolen, and yelling to my wife to call the police, he jumped off and ran down the street... Aside from a bent pedal spindle and a tweaked rear rim, the bike was OK.

Well, I went ahead and bought it. I won't get it for a couple of weeks, and I will post pics then. I purchased it from the LBS, who sold the bike originally. I talked to the owner of the shop today, and apparently the original owner was in a bad accident on a different bike, shortly after buying the Paramount. He was unable to ride after the accident, so the bike sat at his moms house till last year when he traded it in on some exercise equipment. It is all original, including tires and Brooks saddle which looks brand new. The entire bike is in excellent condition with only a few very minor paint chips. All the components are in new condition. From what I could tell on the head badge, The last number is an 8. That would make it a 1978? It is really a beautiful bike, and I'm really excited about getting it. Oh, I did get it for $500.00, and it is White, 63cm.

Congratulations! I can't wait to see pictures. The serial numbers on Paramounts of 70s and 80s vintage are on the left rear dropout. Richard Schwinn has posted a great guide to interpreting Paramount serial numbers on the Waterford website at http://www.waterfordbikes.com/2005/d...ount/index.php.

63 cm? BIIIIIG.

I can stand over it flat footed, haven't ridden it yet but couldn't pass it up. I rode a 25" Flandria for several years and was fine with that.

I'm not knocking it. Some people are tall. I'm 6'3, and I ride a 24.

I've got long legs for my height(6'-35" inseam) and a lot of bikes I've ridden that supposedly fit me for tope tube length, are short on the seat tube. I guess this bike is a little to big for my upper body, but I had to have this one.

Good price! I'm waiting form my 63cm 1964 Paramount to arrive. I paid $450 plus shipping and a few extras. The bike comes with a never used but correct set of new decals and head badge. It will need to be disassembled and repacked and new cables. It will also need a paint job, but I'll save my money and wait until winter of '06-'07. Any suggestions on where to have it painted? I can drive it to Hot Tubes in MASS or to Marinoni in VT, or ship to Waterford. Any one had any experience with these folks. Thanks for the help.

I was lucky that mine doesn't need decals or a repaint. (see pics in other thread;my new 1978 paramount) I have heard that Waterford is excellent. My boss sent his 89 in a few years ago and was very pleased with their work.

If it were my bike, I'd ship it to Waterford. I'm sure either of the others could do a credible job, but Richard Schwinn at Waterford takes a very personal interest in restoring these bikes properly.
