News from the decal front:

First, for you guys who've been waiting on your order -- they're here, finally. I'm getting them separated and they'll be going in the mail to you Saturday morning.

Second, the turnaround in getting the decals back from the printer has been the weakest link in the whole process; I had to gang several orders up in order to keep the production costs down, and it just took too long -- longer than I was comfortable with, and definitely longer than you guys were comfortable with. Anyway, I worked it out with the printer so now I can just send orders in as I get the art finished. This will cut the turnaround time significantly, and I apologize to you guys who've been patiently waiting.

I'll post some pics of new stuff this evening.

Here's a few selections from the past month's work:

Hey, what gives? Where's the "Made in Taiwan for Motobecane" decal from my batch? I expected to see it right up there with the other classic stuff!

Seriously though, they look great, and I can't wait to see mine.

lotek 10-15-05 01:42 PM

yah, I'm just picturing that Pog decal on the headtube of a
Ferrari Red Pogliaghi. . . or wait, someone suggested Black. . .
I don't know.
The decals look wunnerful.
Did you do the gaspipe decals this time too?

Marty

Nah -- I've still got sets for an ItalVega, Ritchey Ascent Comp, and Raleigh Firebird and Rodeo to finish up. I definitely like the idea though.

Groovey dude!

Hey; tell me about the ItalVega decals you're doing... For which model, and in what color?

mswantak 10-15-05 07:46 PM

I'll e-mail you a proof of what I've got so far. I'm just waiting for a double-check on the dimensions, then they're done.

cuda2k 10-15-05 09:33 PM

Glad for the update, I was beginning to wonder myself, but had faith you'd let us know if something was causing undue delay. :) Happy to hear that you've worked out a deal to streamline the process though.

You'll be even happier long about the middle of the week when you get a peek at your grinning little fishie. It came out pretty nice.

:):):):):) :D In that case I guess I'd best get that second coat of paint on the frame Tuesday then. Give it 48 hours to dry and hopefully apply the decals on Thrusday or Saturday. The paintjob is coming along fantasicly (is that even a word). Anyone thinking of doing a rattle can job - Duplicolor 'Metal Specks' line has some amazing, well, metal specks in it. Really catches the sunlight.

You have a typo on the Vitus 172 decal. The second accent in the word Légère is wrong. You have written Légére instead of the correct Légère.

Thanks -- error corrected.

Got mine in the mail yesterday as well. :) Putting the first coat of clear on tomorrow afternoon, so hope to have the decals on either later in the afternoon tomorrow or Sunday. Anyone have a suggestion on how long to let a coat of clear sit before handling? last thing I want is finger prints all over! (it's Duplicolor lacquer).

luker 10-21-05 07:50 AM

I've never tried the lacquer, but in 24 hours the clear is dry enough to handle gently. The paint is still pretty soft after four days: I hung the Colnago that I've been working on in my workstand, loosely, with an old tee-shirt in the stand to keep the abrasives away, and when I took it back down, I found that where the tee-shirt touched the frame, the weave of the fabric had left an imprint. I got a little spastic about that, and put the bike away for the night to regain my normal centered calm (ahem). The weirdest thing, in the morning, the weave pattern in the clearcoat was very nearly gone. A little polish and you couldn't see it at all.

Anyway, I'm now guessing that the paint should probably set up a least a week or two before final assembly. Kinda like tubulars, I suppose.

cuda2k 10-21-05 10:01 AM

luker - thanks for the info. The job on your Colnago was very nice. I've been hanging mine from the rear dropouts after each paint coat with a bungie cord. Only contact being made is inside the dropout. Last paint coat was on Tuesday, so by tomorrow I guess I'll put a coat of clear on and make myself wait till next week some time to put the decals on. *tantrum*

Why not print your own decals? With a color laser & decal paper, they come out fine!

cuda2k 10-21-05 11:31 AM

Does your color laser have white ink? Or how about silver?

Having recieved the decals from mswantak, I'm completely sold that the cost is easily worth it. Plus the work that he does to reproduce some of these old decals is amazing.

Other than the missing colors, I think the biggest problem with home generated decals has been that the inks have not held up well with prolonged exposure to sunlight. Works fine for model trains though ...

I'd go with the professionals on this one. Kudos to Mike and the short-run printers!

Just out of curiosity, what is the cost of something like this? I'm definitely planning on doing some painting when I get a chance to, and would like to have some replacement decals.

Send mswantak a personal message. He is quite reasonable.
