1980 schwinn

i have a question about a green schwinn i found. it needs some work, but at this point, i'm just curious what i have. it's a 1980, i found that with the serial number, but there is no model name on it. i don't know how much anyone knows...but it's a green 1980 schwinn with the oval logo, the frame isn't lugged, it's got road bike drops someone turned upside down (i never get that)...but that's all i can tell. from what i've found, i've only seen three models mentioned in that year, the le tour, the paramount, and the sting...since the sting's a bmx and i have a le tour that doesn't look anything like it, i'm guessing paramount, but i have no information on a paramount to compare it with. i don't really know where to look except here and sifting through craploads of google search returns. any ideas?

Since the frame doesn't have lugs it's not a Paramount, Traveler, World Sport or Le Tour. The 27" wheel electro-forged frames were the Continental, Caliente, Varsity, Sportabout, and Suburban. The 26" wheel electro-forged frame model was the Collegiate. The oval logo tells us it's one of the mass-produced models, probably electro-forged.

Do you have pictures?

you know, using google, i wasn't able to find 1980, but i found a 1979 catalog. looking in that, it seems it's either a collegiate or varsity, due to the fact that others in that catalog didn't have the diamond frames. and i know it's got 27" wheels...i'll have to look and see if i can't find the 1980 catalog...if they changed the frames on those other models, it would make a big difference to my analysis here.

Fairly certain that 79-81 models were nearly identical. My 81 traveler matches the 79 spec to the letter.

I believe that's right.

all right, so i'm going with it being the varsity then, since it all matches that. thanks, guys.
