I'll try to dig up a link. To be completely thorough, disc brakes and suspension existed in the 50s too (not sure when the first disc was put on a bicycle, but they had discs on motorbikes by then...)

By 82, they had the "how" of building a dual-suspension aluminum mtb with discs down, although they didn't have the geometry or optimal design tweaks figured out yet.... I could swing a leg over a modern dual-boingger and argue that it has all the trappings of an early 80s bike... I just wouldn't feel sincere in doing so.
I remember when I got my first mtb in 82(?) and thinking: "this is so cool but why did it take them so long to think of it?" All the relevant tech had been fully operational for about 30 years.

WheelTired, Thanks for sharing your great MTB collection! They are all great. I really like the Bigfoot and chrome Mongoose with bi-plane fork in particular--at least so far. +1 to Keep 'em coming!

The Head 610 and the one below it (can't make out the brand/model) are really interesting. I know other bikes have also used a similar elevated chain stay (I'm sure there's another word for it). I'm surprised that design hasn't caught on more since it would avoid chain slap, and also allow for a new chain to be installed/removed without having to take the chain apart. Seems like a good set-up for someone who rides in a lot of sludge or is obsessive about chain cleanliness.

Rad IBOC with AMP fork!

The Kona's pretty sweet, too. Get a project 2 fork on it if the Zoke is blown.

Wheeltired good to see a Cyclepro frame. I raced a Cyclepro Millennium for quite a few years. It was a great riding bike that eventually wound up in commuter duty and finally broke.

The Trek "Bobathon" 9000 was the worst full sus bike I have ever ridden! The things were just awful.

To this day I miss the Girvin fork I had on my Fisher X-Caliber. The absolute best riding fork I have ever used. I will say, for racing the current Fox fork I have performs better, but the ride quality just ain't the same.

Nice collection of rides you have.

This one'll probably get itself laughed out of the thread, but heck, it's an '85 Peugeot ATB/MB so it's qualified. OTOH, they named it "City Express" and pushed it as a commuter, so there's two strikes right outta the gate.

Thanks! I get conflicting opinions.
It got the Cloud 9 saddle treatment when my wife stole it from me.

When I retire, which will be in about 10 years....I will most likely have another 200 or so - they find me........another 2 vintage road bikes today :-/
so, my plan for all this good crap:
I have no idea;;;;;;;;;;;have a car/motorcycle/bicycle auction of epic proportions. 1000 bicycles, 45 cars, 25 motorcycles LOL !

'85 Mongoose w/triple-butted cromoly, full chrome frame. Rides a lot more smoothly than you might expect.

I didn't even toss a leg over the bicycle..LOL, straight to the vault with an epic ghost ride...what a POS, Trek history however. thought about using it for the annual HUFFY TOSS contest :-;

FYI: Looking for vintage slingshot complete; was a team sling rider, I don't have one :-(

Holy crap! A bolt on cam brake with built in cable stop in the mounting plate... that would solve all of my Klunker brake needs!!!

WheelTired, your collection is trip down memory lane with so many bikes I totally forgot about, thank you for sharing! I've seen a number of bikes that I owned at one point but sold or gave away, you saved them all. Thanks again for taking the time to post... too cool... your personal museum!

WheelTired, I used to know the Slingshot brothers(Joel and Mark Groendal). I remember the first one I saw, and was dumbfounded on how it could work. It was a BMX bike they were playing with in their garage at home. At CABDA I rode a mountain bike (double downtube cable, first generation) and was pleasantly surprised that it rode quite well, albeit a bit odd in the turns, but once I adapted it was just fine. By the time they sold the company I lost contact with them. Those were great days, my friend. They pop up on Craigslist once in a while, but mostly word of mouth in the bike community will find one in due time.

I can't compete with some of the great bikes posted but I will through my humble bikes up, not sure of years on them. The Marin should be late '80's early '90's (my first MTB), the Hoo Koo should be mid '90's and the Fuji should be an '83 (dates on components). On to the pics ............
