That appears to be the same stem my brother has on a couple of his bikes. If it is, I can assure you there is plenty of quill left in the steerer! You should still check, of course. It is a strange stem in that the quill is steel and the neck is aluminum.

Feb. 2007. I get a phone call from the California Highway Patrol, asking me if I am the owner of a blue GT mountain bike. I said I used to own one until it was stolen! They told me they had just arrested a "street person" riding it, and noticed my drivers license engraved under the bottom bracket. (Something I recomend everybody do!) I was speechless! Ten years later! They said since it was my property, I could come and claim it any time. I went down to the station, signed a couple of papers, claimed my old steed. I wanted to cry when I saw what had been done to it! The only original parts still on it, were the Judy forks, and Kore skewers. No more Mavic rims, no more Shimano LX components, and no more Ritchy clipless pedals! But plenty of paint chips, scratches, and rust! Not to mention all of the junk that was added after the fact...cheapo lights, book rack, giant tractor seat, etc.

that is a cool enough story that it almost makes the loss worth it. In the end, really, all we got is stories anyhow...you ought to build it back up! That is still a nice bike.

Does a Trek 930 in original trim count as vintage?

It does in my book. And 930s were fantastic bikes for the money, IMO. Your's looks clean!

That's sad...you never got to enjoy your Karakoram when it was new. Well at least you got it back. Did you see mine earlier in the thread? I'm crazy about it. Are you going to fix it up?

Made a trade today. I LOVED my 84 Trek 830, but it was just too small. The seat had to be too high to get full leg extension, and then I was leaning on the bars. I was at the flea market, and ran into a guy who had this. Not "quite" an even trade, but not too lopsided. The best part is that I can ride it. The gumwall tires are even in good shape. An early 80's Diamondback Trail Streak. It has the most laid back geometry I've seen this side of a Raleigh Sports. Suntour AG TEch, but I can see my Deore touring group on it. It has a lot of similar quality equipment as the Trek.,,,,BD

I picked up this mountain bike today. It's a Shogun Prairie Breaker II. The seller said he purchased it new in July of 86. Does anyone have any information on it?

Nice looking bike!! Looks about the same style as my Shogun touring bike. I never got anyone to narrow
down a year on mine, but looking at the components, 86 sounds close enough. What does the Tange label say on the seat tube of the frame.,,,,BD

Nice example! From the frame's geometry, I'd say it qualifies as classic/vintage.
I bought a 930 Singletrack to build up. It's a nice frame of True Temper OX tubes and Trek details.
Made in the USA! I find the classic geometry to fit me better than the compact stuff all current Atb use.
Previous owner installed a Rock Shox on so I don't have the original rigid fork. :(
Once I have it assembled, hope to post pics asap.

Are those Panaracer Smoke tires? Great find, makes me miss my Stumpjumper. :(

Surprising thing is I love it on the road. I am NOT a MTB kind of guy. I bought it (930) tried MTB and didn't like it; so, the bike hung in my garage for 10+ years. Put slicks on it and ride it on the road. With the colder temperatures, its mounted on my TV watching trainer.

I never mixed the two until this summer, when I had a chance to put together a 1982 Stumpjumper. It rides like a giant dog with big sloppy licks. I rediscovered all of the places that I used to ride before I got into "biking", and all summer we were finding excuses to get the old mountain bikes down to go one place or the other. I ended up, by the end of the summer, with three ridgid bikes of various vintages, and I rode one around the white rim trail in moab (the Ibis, if anyone is wondering). I have two more in the works: an '88 Ritchey Ultra and a '91 MB-zip.. I can't ever just do something. I always end up overdoing it.

Did Biopace and STX exist in '86? Though they might not be original...

I'm not sure about STX but I am confident about Biopace. It was available in '86 according to Frank Berto. It appeared at shows in 1985. I don't think STX came along until later, but I could be wrong.

The STX derailleur is definately an upgrade.

Nah, they're Kendas. I also got a nice set of wheels in the trade. QR Joytech polished hubs and Araya
rims. They also had IRC Mythos rustwall tires on them. The nice wheels will find their way onto my XO-3, and the X0-3 wheels will go on the DB with the Mythos tires. Should be a nice look, and will put a QR on the rear of the DB which is bolt on right now. Sorry if that's confusing, I almost confused myself, lol. In other words the Trail Streak will have decent wheels and tires.,,,,BD

Not original equipment, but a nice rider. '92 Trek 970 frame. Recently rescued from casual road duty and returned to the dirt it loves.

89 Raleigh Trials bike. Cost when new, $550. 26" front wheel, 24" rear wheel. I have pics taken last year. The pics are too big to post. I don't know how to link to Photobucket. Can anyone tell me how to link to my photos that are located on a photo storage website?

I hesitate to call this a mountain bike, particularly if the tires are original as I believe they are. It's more of a mountain/trail hybrid. Anyway, it's a 1985 Nishiki Belair. The interesting thing about it is it has Suntour LePree components, the one with the 3 pulley RD. LePree components were only made for 1 or 2 years and Nishiki had an exclusive on them the first year, 1985. (source T-Mar and froze)
