My '95 Balance AL450. I found it in pieces with an extra set of wheels at a garage sale this passed summer. It had mismatched shifters - one gripshift and one thumb. There was one RD bolted to the hanger and another hanging off the the chain. And the rear cantilevers were missing. After a a little scavenging and a new set of "triggers/levers" it came together quite nicely! With the paint stripped and just the alcoa 7005 aluminium sticker as a clue, it took quite a while to figure out what it was exactly but was pretty pleased with my score once I did!

Nice winder!! You NEVER see those. I've seen exactly one in person. Lemon yellow, hanging in an old 18 wheeler trailer at a surplus yard. Everytime I asked about the bikes in the trailer, they said not for sale.,,,,BD

The 87 Cimarron does not have lowrider braze-ons, nor does the 88 IIRC. I sold these back in the day. They returned for 89, when the Cimarron was repurposed as an expedition or adventure bike, with 5, count them 5 waterbottle mounts, including one on the stem. Here's my 87:

Do you know about the late release color for 1989? The catalog showed just the red, but midyear they made a smoked beige run as well. Almost cool enough to get me off a red bike (most of the rest of my bikes are red).

In the pic, that's 21 years of steady use. Since then, no real change but for a pair of Speedplay Frogs when I couldn't get shoes that fit both my feet and the toe clips.

When looking at any nice Greenville Schwinn, check the tops of the seatstays for cracks. That's the reason for the large yellow section on mine. It's a quick fix at any (steel) framebuilder if you catch it when it's just a crack. My own framebuilder said, "But the failure mode would be gentle" as he was more curious to document its demise. I had to 'splain to him that I was not about failure when I was 20 or 50 miles from the nearest paved road. Fixed promptly!

This is a craigslist find. It is super clean. It's fast & smooth, the 7spd XT is an excellent group. I have lots of other vintage Mtn bikes that I'll post when I get pics.

I bought a sidewinder brand new when I was around 12 yrs old, 40 pounds worth of schwinns finest varsity based offroad goodness to keep up with the newfound clunker craze! THat was the first bike I ever had with >1 gear and I probably bought it because I liked all the blue anodized aluminum it was decked out with. I believe those are the original tire pattern that came with the bike, saddle may be a replacement?

I picked this up over the summer. It's a Trek Y-11. It's in near perfect condition and rides amazing. I bought it because it was so ugly I couldn't resist it. I added new tires and had my LBS put shifters in. Only thing it needs right now is a better saddle.

Pictured as found. Bought for $50. PO added new tubes, tires, and had basic adjustment tune-up done at a LBS. ($90 later). Rides perfect. Nothing needs done, besides a light cleaning.

Nice High Sierra! I wish mine had the original stuff on it, but my buddy stripped it before giving me the frame. It is doing just fine with the gear from a 91-93ish Trek 8000. It only weighs an ounce more than my 2009 P-1, at 30 pounds 6 ounces. My younger braver coworker wheelied it around the parking lot, and loved it, hehe. Going to be taking a pic of it tomorrow morning to show here. Black/silver LX and XT mixed with roller cams, looks pretty awesome IMHO.,,,,BD

I built this up this past summer/fall but traded it for something else. It was my idea on a semi modern klunker with a vintage road loook. It was only setup as a 1x8 as it's setup with a american size bottom bracket and really kicks the cranks away from the seat tube for a front derailleur to reach that far. It's actually a Walmart Schwinn Point Beach and every single part stripped off and some vintage parts installed. The cool parts are the Ross bullmoose bar/stem and matching lugged chrome fork. Then with some little touches like a Campy NR headset, Colnago seat post clamp, GT saddle(faux brass rivets, perforated pleather). Surprisingly it was pretty light at around 25lbs. The fork wasn't bent but it gave the feel like there was some serious chopper rake as the wheel almost felt like it was flopping back and forth.
