Is this vintage yet, and can I still call it a mountain bike? Its a Schwinn High Sierra from the mid 80's.

Please tell me that High Sierra is "too high" for you. I have been looking for a very tall mountain bike, that will lend itself
to road bars. IE:60-62 road bike sized, but 26" wheels. Yes it is vintage, and yep it's a mountain bike to me? Awesome bike!


A customer came in last week with a broken 25.8 seatpost, and said it was off an old Jamis. I told him to bring the bike by when he had a chance, that I would love to see it. He came by yesterday, and it was worth the wait!! It was a late 80's Dakota, loaded out and cool as hell. Deore XT derailleurs, perforated black turbo saddle, Cunningham roller cam brakes, Araya round rims, like the Specialized Saturae's but with only an Araya logo, and the best part!!... Fillet brazed front triangle. I have not seen anything this oldschool and cool since I moved here. Said he would never part with it, and I don't blame him. He bought it new, and has been riding it since!,,,,BD

And my free Team Marin, as it sits. I just got an entire Sram X-4 group tonight, minus the FD. It is VERY tempting to build it up with that. Kind of like the STI thing on a vintage road bike. The wheels and group are the same as my 09 P-1, so it would make a nice comparison, steel vs aluminum. I may end riding the Jamis more, if I can get it dialed in to fit me, hehe.,,,,BD

The bike fits me perfectly unfortunately for you. Its 59CM CTC if I remember correctly. The stem and seatpost are too high at the moment and are just there for the picture, as the bike is not quite done yet. I need to run cables, bar wrap, and to dial everything in. They will be coming down to a more reasonable height soon.

Nice very nice!!!! I just order (won) a NOS IRD suspension correct rigid fork for my 2001 Trek 8000. I don't need not steeenkin shock absorbers!!
I'm going completely old school these days. No more carbon. All steel (I now have 3 steel road bikes). No suspension. V-brakes or Cantis. Yah baby!!!

Thanks. It was a really tough decision, but ultimately I went with the ti flite instead.

Not sure what year it is but not bad for $55. I suspect it's mid-90's. I replaced the biopace crank and rebuilt the bearings, and added a blue Brooks B-17.

Really! 1988? I remembered lusting after them but couldn't remember when. This one is my first MTB, and I just got her 2 weeks ago. I lost interest in MTB's when they got front shocks and all that other crud.

That's the rear brake, it's mounted under the frame! Cool feature I thought!

He knows it's a brake. Roller cams are a type of brake. I think it's a U-brake instead of roller cams, though.

Ahh, gotcha, it's a cantilever brake if that helps.

Naw, cantilever bosses are below the rim. U-brake and roller cam bosses are above the rim. Couldn't find any Specialized Catalogs, but found the specs.

I think Golden Boy got the year right because of the color.

I just picked up a mid-late 90's KHS Comp Montana. Looks like a non suspension corrected geometry for the fork.
Old school = cool
Vintage = marketing term to "you are going to pay too much"

^ wow are you sure you ride that! it's super clean the late 80s striped schwinn logo is one of my favorites too

ok, so here's my 2000 HardRock... like i said it's not really "vintage", more "old skool"; it's more of a transition period bike with the slightly bigger tubes, though it's still cromo and got more in common with MTBs from the 90s than the crazy full suspension bikes that are called mountain bikes today.
