95 North Star Estrella, picked up on CL couple months ago for 30. Gave it some paint and a few updated parts I had around, love it! It's weird I've had alot of mt bikes over the last 2 decades, brand new and old, and nothings felt more right to me than this one. And it's pretty obviously way to small of a frame for me. Hey it works, and at a hair under 22lbs, no complaints!

I'm not familiar with North Star, is that a Canadian manufacturer?

Thanks! North Star was only around for a few years in the mid 90s, based out of Boulder, CO. This frame used Fuji Stout-Light butted cromo, which I'm not familiar with but feels good and the weights pretty light.

Thanks! What's funny is I didn't even notice it had two bells until after I brought it home. In my defense, it was dark out lol

Here is my police auction purchase from the weekend, a late '80s Raleigh Rocky II. It's pretty scuffed up but it is mechanically sound and is a pretty solid ride.

My Spec. Have it set up with slicks. Those are coming off in favor of a dirt tire.

Wife's Spec. Hybrid tire front, dirt tire on back.

1989 Specialized Hard Rock

It was stolen last fall by a neighborhood kid. (son used it and left it in front of the garage) I caught him riding and chased him down with my car and took it back. He had spray painted everything... frame, wheels, tires, crank, chain... everything, so this was my spring restoration project. I had the frame media blasted and powder coated and put her back together with some low end Shimano kit.

I'll never tell him, but he did me a favor. I hadn't rode in years but restoring this bike has got me riding again. I've probably put about 100 miles on it since I finished. (which is a lot for me)

Way to go Alan (both with the restoration and the bike thief smackdown!) I haven't seen many 80's-era Hardrocks, very cool.

Why are you surprised, does it sound too cheap or too expensive?

I went out last night and bought and traded a few things. I have a friend who gets around by bike, but his only working one was a Magna BSO. I thought I'd help him out a bit and give him this:

in exchange for the other bike he had sitting around:

He got a Raleigh Technium Skylite in pretty nice shape, and I got a very neglected Trek 820. He is quite happy with his new Raleigh, and I get a base for the next bike I want to build up. My plans are to get a new wheelset with an IGH and drum brakes, north road bars, Big Apples, and a nice sprung saddle and have a good all weather commuter.

On the way to his house I also picked this up:

A Barracuda A2E frame. I don't really know what I'm going to do with it, but it was $15 and my size, so I'm not going to complain.

My GT seemed to know that one of the bikes it was towing is likely to replace it, I had the spring housing on one of the brakes snap, plus it kept jumping between gears, even though it was perfectly fine being ridden earlier in the day...

This bike has been ridden more since I bought it, than any others(mostly towing my son). It is a nice riding bike, but I don't know why folks make such a big deal about them. Tows well though.

Prolly because they were the last of the nice lugged MTB frames available. By about 94, when B-stone pulled out of the American market, 99% of what was available was TIG welded.
Nice lookin' bike!

^^Nice Sierra. I'm digging the 3-speed conversion. Seeing some similarities with my new vintage MTB which I will post in a moment.
