I'm gonna say yes. In 91, IIRC, sloping top tubes, and shock absorber forks, were still a few years away.

I believe the rigid forks of the era, based on my shogun and others I've seen, had a fairly long rake, generally putting the axle farther forward than the nearly straight shock absorber forks do.

I have ridden both "rigid" forks (I put the word rigid in quotes because a good rigid fork is stops being completely rigid when it absolutely positively needs to flex, and you want it to flex), and shock absorber forks which treat every pressure to the front wheel like a blow that needs to be cushioned whether you want it to be cushioned or not.

I may be old fashioned, but I still prefer the "rigid" fork made of high quality steel or even CF over the squishy (IMHO) shock absorber forks.

This is the oldest sloper I've owned. They took full advantage of the U-brake. No way you could ride this bike with cantis from back then - your heels would be bruised and bloody! Larger sizes of this bike had level TTs, though.

'88 Trek 900. Only year this model was made, actually. The frame and most of the components (but no wheels) were given to me for free via a Freecycle posting about 3 years ago. I recently got around to making a complete bike out of it. Stole the wheels from a Gary Fisher Wahoo that I had never been able to tweak to my liking. I'm fond of this one, though.

Heh. So what good is a U brake if it isn't down where it can collect several pounds of mud samples every few miles?

^^ That frame and fork looks identical to my 88 Raleigh MTB. Except for the rear U brake. ^^ Looks very nice.

I did that day. Didn't like it much, makes me wonder how fun a cyclocross bike with drop bars really is in the mud.

It isn't my "mountain bike", note the slicks. I just got suckered into following a friend down that trail.

Yeah, that's got a bunch of cheap parts on it. I turned a similar rig into a single speed. Fun to ride! The Norco's a step up but still kinda low end. Here's my single speeded department store bike:
