Thanks! It's an Alpina Pro, Triple butted chromoly lugged frame. All I've done to it since I bought it was replace the seatpost, handlebars and both front and rear derailleurs with a set of Mountain LX I had, replacing the Suntour Montechs that came stock. I repacked all the bearings, took everything apart and cleaned, lubed and replaced both derailleur cables and put a new chain on. The bike came to me completely stock with just a couple minor scratches in the paint, this bikes seen few miles in it's like, everything looks new including the Araya RM25 factory rims, and rides very nice. It came with a slingshot handlebar stem which never felt comfortable for me, these Bullmoose bars are perfect.

I've ordered the seatpost and I do have a long reach tektro brake I can use to get the Griz running for now. The wheels are a different problem. It looks like the Bianchi was spread to 140mm or so for a modern drive train (it came without a rear wheel). The solid axle set on the DB is 130 and the set pictured with the Bianchi is 126. Would the 87 Super Grizzly have been any more the 130 originally?

LUCKY BUGGER !

Again, you have a nice machine there. My Alpina Pro came to me strip clean 'cept the chainstay u-brake and the Tange falcon headset. But at least it was the smokey chrome frame and a perfect size for me.Does yours have spoke brazen ons or a strap brazen on?

Basically I took all the parts off a Fuji that another BF member has now and built it back up.One big addition was a Brooks B17 that adds to the comfort factor. Your right, they are nice riding MTBs.

Yes, most mtbs from that time frame were 130mm. Some sporting 6 speed rears. I'd cold set it back to 133mm and be able to use both 130 and 135mm wheels.

+1 with Glenn's suggestion. Both are wonderful bikes.....Ascents were higher level steel offerings, and the Bianchi is lugged. You can always get a BMX U brake on the chainstays if you are searching for options.
I have a later Ascent EX that was given to me, and it's well made, from Tru-Temper tubing.

Actually that Ascent may not be super high level.. it's likely 1986 or 1987.. in 1987 the Ascent came with high-ten stays and fork. Probably similar in 1986. The Ascent EX was always a fully cr-mo frame but the plain Ascent was a significant step down

That color could be "bright turquoise aqua" from the 1987 DB catalog, though the fact it's got Tange MTB tubing stickers on the fork makes me think perhaps it was a 1986 model which might have actually been all cr-mo, or at least main triangle and fork are.

Thanks WNG, I should be able to put a caliper brake on the Bianchi it to get it ridable, but I'd like to get it built up poperly if I'm going to keep it. is there anything I should be aware of with the sizing for the u-brake?
Frantik I'm certain the DB is the plain Ascent an not the EX as the derailleur looks like a generic shimano. I think the wheels on both these bikes came from somewhere else.

Thanks WGN I definitely like the ride of the Asecnt, and getting the Bianchi on the road should be possible with a caliper for now, but I'd like to get is built properly if I'm going to keep it. Is there anything I need to be aware of with sizing the on BMX u-brakes? The XT shifters are 6 speed, so I assume the original hubs were 130's.

That catalog page is telling Frantik, the DB is clearly not an EX, but different wheels in any case, no evidence of Weinmann Concave rims.

you probably have the 86 model then.. i wouldn't be surprised if before the introduction of Ascent EX, the Ascent frame was all cr-mo

handlebars. the bars are actually older than the bike - i had them on another bike for two years before this one. SunTour X-Press Accushift Plus shifters, yo! hydro front disc is a sop to modernity.

still can't decide what i want to do with the rear brakes - leave as-is isn't really an option, 'cause pads are hard to find. been considering Magura hydros, but i'll probably just get a good quality canti or v-brake. need to get better pads though so i don't eff up the finish on new wheel when i put it on. i'd go disc on the rear as well, but i don't have the money to have a framebuilder add the mounts and get the bike painted, and i don't want to damage the bike with one of the hodge-podge adapter systems.

considering going back to a rigid fork, but i'll want/need to have one custom built (as i want to keep the disc brake). but i really want to be able to reinstall my front Blackburn rack as well.
Sweet ride!

Just picked this one up today: 1996 Pinnacle, pretty much their top of the line for that year. 22 inch frame, Deore LX RD, crankset and hubs, STX RC FD and brakes, with a seat post a mile long. I got a great deal due to the Rock Shox being frozen.

Came with the original owner's manual and big 1996 catalog.

There's a lot more chips in the paint than there appears, still the bike rides like a dream.

Robert

Looks like a sweet ride, I have a Jamis Dakar with a frozen Rock Shok Judy XC also, just picked up a newer Judy to replace it ( cheaper then rebuilding the old XC ). I don't see a lot of Nishiki's around here but did pick up a aluminum Cascade that was done in by Sandy, was able to save the frame and the STX RC 8spd shifters which I am going to use when I build it back up.

Archangel 1183,

Very nice collection of bikes there ! I'm sure a few of them left you with sellers remorse. I would love to come across one of those Raleigh Mountain Tour bikes. I dig those GT's too ! What years were they? I ride a 93 Borrego myself. Love it, have put the original Scott AT-2 bars back on and it certainly gives me more leverage to fast attack the hills !

One thing, I noticed on the Scott bike it had the stem with the bolt hole in the riser part. I am not a fan of those as I had a close call with it. Apparently it is real important to keep the plug cover on it at all times so water cannot get in there and rust out the clamping mech. Felt it give on the ride but managed to tighten it enough so I could carefully get back home. Water got in there and sat letting rust have a go. Oh well !

I also want to know which ones you did keep too !

This is an '89 (I believe) Univega Range Rover ES I picked up a couple of weeks ago for $25. Not really an MTB as it won't take 2" knobbies but is a nice path bike. The Exage Country group works well and the bike rides nice. I picked it up to use as a loaner bike for friends who aren't tall enough to fit on our other bikes.

I don't have the space to collect any those. Those are bikes I've had over a span of about 5 years. The only bikes we keep are my Raleigh road bike and the gf's Motobecane.

GF Hoo Koo E Koo. The year is baffling me. Looks a great deal like '87s that I've seen online but no chain stay u brake mount. Came to me retrofitted with a front shock, 1" steerer. Hadn't come across too many front shocks while 1" was still standard. Seatpost is stuck but a fella of similar height and inseam was prev owner. Might just build it.
