Love that bike, looks like you got it powdercoated at some point. I own a 1993 GT Outpost and its a nice bike. I have street slicks on it, and did some upgrades in the form of new wheels, LX rear derailleur, etc. Its a nice riding bike....I think its straight gauge cro-moly but it could be double butted....not sure.

Thanks!! Yeah I took the frame to a bump shop had it stripped and repainted. My inspiration for this build was a 74 Raleigh Sports I had and regretfully sold to fund another project. Anyhow, I have way over spent for this build because I replaced damn near everything. The good thing is I never plan to sell it as this bike has sentimental value. As far as the tubing is concerned... All I know is that it's 4130. Not sure about he butting.

Thanks to this thread I picked a 1987/88 Schwinn High Sierra I found at a garage sale for $40. 23" in the black chrome. Mostly original, but in need of some TLC after sitting outside for too long. Its stripped to the frame and framesaver-d. Tomorrow I leave on a short tour, but can't wait for the build when I return (and photos of course.)

It'll be right here. Since most of the original components are in good mechanical shape, the build will be pretty close to the original. A few cockpit changes, and a lot of work on cleaning it up should be all that is needed. I also am beginning to think mine is a 1989. I was thrown off at first by the lack of a "Black chrome" color option in the specs provided by https://mombat.org/Schwinn_Specs.htm , but the components line up and the decals are quite different than the earlier ones I've seen. Very cool, ultra-modern / Bauhaus sort of lettering.

Heck yeah man, that's super cool... congrats on the 1st place finish... 1st is 1st!

All of mine are still up in the rafters of my fathers garage, a few 1st that I was quite proud of back in the day, pretty competitive BMX racing in SoCal back in the 70's! My father turns 76 in a few months, he asked me to help him go through the garage this summer, I guess they'll go up in my rafters for the 30 years or so. Ha-ha...

The thing about mtb racing, back then and perhaps now, is I had no idea I'd won until well after I finished. The Tahoe Roubaix (and lots of other races back then) was like 20 miles of backcountry, with every category on the course at the same time.

Thank you, folks! Neo_pop -- your posts on the dropbar mtb thread have been helpful and inspirational. And simpleton, the GT above is sick.

I don't want to overdo it, because I have already posted some of these on the other thread, but yes, if your thumbies have a steel clamp all you need is a longer bolt. I did some minor filing of the clamp, too, but it wasn't really necessary. I really like the way they work. They are similar to bar-end shifters in that you usually have to move your hand a bit to shift, but it's still on the bars.

As you can see, this bike is on the verge of too small for me, but in this case the relatively long top tube (of mtbs from this era) helps. And it is just so much fun to ride, off road or on.

I miss those days! Let's call them a little more loose, not so many sponsorship and "proper professional" behavior back then. Plus, it was the time when Johnny T. was emerging as the race killing machine on his "Signature" Tange Prestige Mongoose!!! Those large cage first generation XT platforms are still top on my list. I'm up to my 4th set, the '88 Easton Reflex I bought for my daughter came with a gorgeous pair on that near new anodized beauty!

Here's the Latest addition to the fleet. a Mid 80's fillet brazed Fisher something or other. Mt Tam. Possibly... This is going to be a long term restoration project. I am now hell bent on bulding up a drop bar MTB. But before that happens I need to build the bike fund back up. Probably going to sell some of my blingy 29er stuff.



I had to try on the cream fat franks. I took them off though... I didnt want to leave my GT hanging

I'm not really sure.... I've only had them mounted on Sun Rhyno Lites and they're pretty wide.

Simpleton, what's the serial number start with? I think that's a Montare but if it's a Tam it's one of the very first. I was sure it was an 88 Montare but I know for certain it's not an 86-88 Mt Tam. The seat tube reinforcement doesn't appear beveled. Double eyelets didn't happen those years either. I think it's an 85.

Whatever it is, it brings back a lot of memories. In the mid 80s I used to do regular Thurs nite rides with Gary F and his team, and a bunch of other folks.

No some Montares were fillet brazed too. I think that's a Montare SC. I had a green and yellow 87 tam I got in 1995, it had one rear eyelet. The old catalog incorrectly states two but I know for sure mine had one. That yellow one is a lovely bike, I wish I had kept mine. I actually gave it away when I upgraded to a fork suspension.

He posted this bike in the appraisals section also. The serial# has a T in it. I understood that to make it a Mt Tam.

And I agree, that is a nice looking bike.

Wow, lucky man simpleton! Your '85 Fisher is a beauty!!! My '88 Cimarron LE has a similar Tange Fisher fork but mine is not fillet brazed like yours. I did some bartering of a '82 Stumpjumper with Charles the owner of Passion Trail Bike up in Belmont, CA, he sent me a yellow fork off a '85 for my build. Here it is after I finished stripping it to bare metal.

In '85 the Fisher Competition was made by Tom Teesdale after Tom Ritchey stopped making the high end Fishers. Tom Teesdale designed the four prototype Barracuda frames back in '91/'92 and he has always had his own T.E.T. Cycles. I would love to have a fillet brazed Tange Prestige Fisher made by either of the Toms!
