Diamond Back Topanga, with a chainstay brake. Fresh from the seller, a little wash and wax and some tires and a rear wheel and new bars, and we were ready to roll by 4:00. A nice riding bike. Thought of Frantik when I saw the chainstay brake.

On that Black Chrome Schwinn High Sierra, I saw one this weekend at the shop, Someone rolled it in, (with a full touring rig on it) with the same black chrome finish, BUT with awesome roller cam brakes, I was smitten, but it rolled out before I was able to talk to the owner and tell him what a great bike he had.

That's what I was thinking, frame serial starts with 7, but the frame was probably made for '88. Ran across this the other day with a local reseller, and it met all the criteria:
1) Tall frame.
2) 80's Graphics.
3) Good builder.
4) Price.
I may throw a rear rack on it, and use it for an all-rounder.

yeah it could be 1987 production year but the graphics are definitely 1988 sales year

that "someday" came a lot sooner than I thought neither me nor my girlfriend were feeling the orange-red color, especially combined with the green frame. We wanted PINK and PINK we shall get! I spent a couple hours googling differing pink spray paints and eventually settled on Krylon fluorescent pink, which they call "Cerise". Thankfully it's actually pink, and it also glows under the black light just like the green

actual PINK! now my OCD can rest

That's for sure. An absolute perfect match. Mine may stay pristine, no racks, just pulling a trailer when necessary.(Actually, by the end of June I already had a rack on it.)

Hey frantik, thanks for the help and advice on the Krylon Webbing paint! I picked up the Yeti turquoise and yellow colors for my modernized dirt drop Nishiki Ariel build... like me, my 8 year old angel also loves the Yeti color scheme and she also digs the crazy paint finishes of the late 80's and early 90's, so she is stoked about doing the black webbing over the Yeti colors. I guess it's sort of a tribute to my vintage mountain bike racing days. This is our project build, she is involved in every step, but I agreed to let her steer the ship when it comes to the paint. It's cool, I get my Yeti colors and she gets to express her creativity with a paint finish I would have never considered. Here is a link to the thread I started for the build, I'll be updating with photos as the project moves along.

Yeah man, that pink is way better than the funky orange! Good call on the redo... enough with the teaser photographs... let's see the two seater!

haha i have to put it back together.. i just painted the fork this morning too so will need to let it dry completely before installing it

here is the "before" shot though

I have plans to upgrade almost everything using parts i've got on hand.. late 80s deore derailleurs and thumb shifters, 90s STX wheels. new handlebars and stems. the driveside crankarm may be replaced with a shimano 600 arm, though all i've got are some biopace rings that fit that arm. I don't really like biopace but it may not make much difference on the tandem, or i may just get some round rings. I think the frame is all plain gauge chromo.. not the worst but not the best. but at least with the upgrades it should ride nice and be reliable

i posted a thread about the bike in the tandem forum --> https://www.bikeforums.net/showthread...bies-saying-hi

Here is this one...

https://orangecounty.craigslist.org/bik/3802756723.html

It's not black chrome but it is a High Sierra with roller cam brakes... poor thing has been lingering on Craigslist for a month. I spoke with the seller, he said I could have it for $25.00 since he wants it gone. Kinda' sad, almost like a stray animal, makes me want to bring it home and clean it up. However, it's not my size and I've only recently gotten out of the bicycle doghouse and I'm not looking to go back over an ill-fitting bike.

That's wild! The stock bike is nothing I'd even notice or pay attention... yet, with the 80's paint colors and webbing paint... you nailed it! That's awesome, great job and I can't wait to see the finished bike!!!

buy it, keep the parts, donate the frame?

yeah the ad actually didnt have a picture, but for $200 for a tandem i figured i couldn't go wrong, especially since it was basically just a big 26" wheeled mtb. i was like, i'll just replace anything that sucks. including the paint job

I don't give a Rats a$$ if it doesn't fit me, for $25 I would be all over that. What size is it, I can ride anything from 19" to 23" in a MTB frame. I could use every part on there for other builds even if it didn't fit or use this as a good reason to build my wife up a MTB. All that I see on our CL is junk or over priced Xmart BSO's, sheess.

THe thumbies are worth $25 alone, even if you bought it, flipped the parts and threw the frame away (ducks) you'd come out on top. The rear derailleur looks like it might even be a high end suntour.

Or give the frame to someone who needs it, after selling the parts. Or list it in the frame swap thread and trade for a larger one. Lots of possibilities here. Nothing gets you out of the bicycle doghouse quite like a dinner out, or roses, or just a nice card, bought with part of your gains.

I just picked this up today, a late 1980's Miyata Terra Runner. I bought it from the original owner, who upgraded the shifters and derailleurs in 1989 with Deore XT. Very clean paint, nice overall condition.

Found a 93 Paramount R30. Original drive train, but wheels are cheap replacements. He wants 450 bucks. Bike is clean, in good condition. Thinking of offering him 250. What say you?

At the thrift today for $10. XT hubs, rear is 6 speed UG, pedals, thumb shifters, Suntour XCD derailleurs, Sugino cranks. 88/89ish. Chronic condition of old bikes found cheap... stuck seatpost. Arrgh.

Wow, that is super clean, but obviously ridden enough to have had the middle ring replaces. I bet hit house/car/garage etc.. were all in similarly well cared for shape.

Great score enjoybikes, I can't believe you only paid $10.00! I picked a minty Reflex ALX99 last months for my daughter's 8th birthday, her favorite colors are pink and blue, so it was too good to pass up. The bike was made here in the States, likely in the Raleigh facility for Easton. That is pretty nice that you could pick up a rare bike from a short period of a few years when Easton was making mountain bike, the frame is "screwed and glued" construction and Easton only produced the bike from 1988 until 1991 (possibly early 1992) before they caved to pressure from all the other bike manufacturers that were buying and building frames with Easton tubing. The anodizing on the aluminum main tubes still looks to be in nice condition. Those large cage XT pedals are some of my favorites, right up there with the Suntour XC II pedals... the pedals are worth three times what you paid for the bike... like I said, great score!

Here is a link to MOMBAT for info on Easton Reflex bikes:

thanks! I found a few tidbits in the forums about them. Funny how something that sells for almost a grand is now worth two orders of magnitude less now. If I can get the seatpost out I'Ll be a happy man.
