Q: In the mid to late 80's was there a "go to" brand or style of toe clips, or were toe clips chiefly generic brands?

definitely, bars, stems, their saddles are very popular. They have always done tires and those are still bigger than most bike brand tires. Their softgood are very popular too, shoes, cloths, helmets... all major brands (Trek, spesh, giant) have accessory and component lines, even if they are under a different name (i.e. bontrager).

Not sure when tioga came out but they made a wicked burly plastic toe clip.

I usually went with Specialized. Seemed a little tougher than Christophe.
The toughest ones I used were GT, but I don't think they came out 'til the 90s. Strap was wider than average, impossible to fit in most clips and difficult to feed through pedals as well. Clip was very tough, too.

2000 Trek 820. Bought it this summer to cruise around the beach and run errands. Payed a little too much but it is in great shape and has a new tune up. It was a bike shops rental/ lender bike so it is well maintained. Only downside is that it has a slight creak in the bottom bracket, maybe the pedals. When we go back next year I will deal with that issue and swap out the knobbies for some Conti cruise contacts and add a rack.

I know literally nothing about the manufacturer nor about the frame itself. Probably triple butted, really lightweight and has a great sound.

Pretty much stock condition yet, don't think this bike was used more than 300 km's.
Planning to build a drop bar city bomber out of it with a rear rack and fenders. Also needs bigger tyres, planning on a pair of 2.1 slicks.

This just came in the mail, 1984 Mongoose ATB in maroon. Its actually chrome under the paint. I seen more chrome than maroon that is for sure. It has a bi-plane fork as well. Came with Dia-Compe 980 brakes, 2 old chrome blackburn water bottle cages and a fluted SR 25.8mm seat post.
I was running a entry level Ross that has no braze on points aside from fender eyelets, so this one will be a huge step up for general commuting. I didnt realize the headset was so large, so I just ordered a Tioga headset in 32.7mm coming tomorrow.

I had a fun ride over the weekend that stretched my riding experience and left me wanting more. My '84 Univega Alpina Uno was rocking the single tracks on the 10k course at Glacial Hills Park here in northern Michigan. What a hoot. The trails traversed the sides of the hill that brought trees kissing close and on one side had ravines. If any of you are near the area, check it out. Granted it was only 300ft climbing in the short course, it was technical if you like to zip along. Here is a pic or two....

Just got this Klein Pinnacle looks to be a 1994 model, A non catalog color. it has a mix of Deore XT 7 speed and Deore XT 8 Speed grouppo. Matching Mission Control Bars Syncro Seat post and Flite Saddle with ti rails. A low end RST CAPA Fork and V-Brakes. And yes the Parrot sqeaky horn came with it.

Would have lined up next to the Kos Kruiser in the cruiser division races back in the 80s BMX era. That class of bike never really took hold at the tracks where I raced so ended up seeing very few of this style bike. Next thing you know, mountain biking became all the rage and the BMX cruiser died an early death.

The King Sting was offered as a 5 & 10 speed. Was a pretty rare bike when they were new. The Murray Baja was a another, very early MTB BMX--looking Specialized Stump Jumper fighter. Were baby steps into the future MTB market. Cheers Chris
