Great the stem is original and same colour too. It would be hard to replicate! I actually owned this KE at one time but traded it, regretted it and jumped when the BF member asked if I wanted the frame back.
There is a great source on retromtb with a guy who collects many of the models and has a good write up on the history and bikes.

1992 KHS Summit, currently set up as a 7spd and seeing action on downhill trails in the area such as Sandy Ridge. Pics were taken last week, had a bit of snow up here

I know I'm super late here but, that bike is pretty much total perfection! 
That is one of the most amazing drop bar conversion of a vintage mountain bike that I have seen although I am partial to the whole drop bar conversion thing on vintage in mtbs. I'll bet that it is an awesome commuter and would be a really good tourer too. I just wanted to say great job and if you had a parts list and wanted to post it it would go unappreciated

Just picked this gem up for $100. The frame and drivetrain are extremely clean. Everything works expect for the front derailleur, which needs a little tuning. The tubes are not filled all the way so they might not be holding air very well. Overall, I think it was a good score!
Does anyone know which year model this is? I looked up the Specialized retro catalogues but couldn't find anything that matches with this guy.

Using the date codes on the Shimano components probably won't help since it's not at all stock. For example, there's no way Specialized specced an LX RD on a Hardrock.
Looks like a nicely put together commuter though!

Charlie, doesn't help that Tom built quite a few for you and Gary. Lol. Just wanted to say thanks for the posters. I've got them on displayed in my shop! Do you still ride your older stuff nowadays or stick to modern stuff?

The "lug" is fillet-brazed to the head tube and the top tube inserted into it. This solves a problem with cleaning up lugless frames, which is that it is easy to undercut the end of the braze and create what Tom calls the "can opener" effect, i.e. imperceptible thinning of the steel tube right at the point of the brass fillet.

I did too much sleuthing on this, but didn't turn up anything conclusive. My guess would be 1996. 95 and 96 were the only years with this pointy version of the Hardrock logo on the down tube. The 95's have the Specialized "S" on the seat tube, which this one is missing. There don't seem to be any catalog images for the 96's (only the higher end models pictured). I'm curious: does it have a little canti hanger brake noodle on the non-drive side near the seatpost binder?

I spent the last few days doing the same and I too ended up with nothing conclusive. It has to be pre 1997 because that's they switched the Specialized decal from top tube to down tube. It seems like 96's have the S logo on the side of the seat tube as well. 93's have the pointy version of the Hardrock logo on the down tube but the Specialized logo on the top tube seems to be less spaced out pre 1994. I think the best bet would be 1994 and Specialized somehow produced some with the pointy Hardrock logo. It's interesting to note that all 1994 Stumpjumpers and Rockhoppers have the pointy model logo on the down tube.
I just took a look at the seatpost binder and it didn't seem like there is a canti hanger. I'm hoping someone with more information could chime in and identify the year of this Hardrock!
