Hey everyone, I'm new here. Man, I love seeing these old bikes getting used! Over the last few months I picked up a Specialized RockCombo, a Schwinn High Sierra and two 86 or 87 "his and hers" Diamondback Apex bikes to rehab. I was going to post a few pictures but the site wont let me. Maybe I need to post more first as some forums seem to work that way. Anyways, I'll post them soon.

Hey,

Not too up on the later GTs, that said, the frame and fork look in good shape. Hopefully it fits you. Lightweight aluminium with a cromo fork is a good thing. Plus that it comes with a working dropout hanger. Depending on how deep your parts bin is, it will be a good, cheap build.

Let us know how it proceeds.

Post some pics when you can, there is a Post of Show us your Diamond Back's on the forum.

Its pretty easy to tell the 1986 from the 1987 models for Diamond Backs. the type of text for the model lettering is different between the two years.

1986: Lettering thick font close spacing
1987: Thin letters spaced out with line underneath

Thanks! They are 1987 bikes then. I got 2 at the same time, his and hers. They are just two different sized bikes. I've spent the last few weeks taking them apart, cleaning and reassembling. They should be great for years to come. Still don't have 10 posts but will soon and then I'll post pictures.

How about the ugliness of this '96 Trek 7000? Just got it yesterday (60$) and will need some paint and get rid of the ape-hangers. Otherwise it is freshly tuned, new chain and Jagwire cables. Just needs some fresh shiny sprayed on it.

I will post this one here (it was here or "what have you been wrenching on lately").

As a racer dude I am on thin ice with this one. Not a lot of experience on MTB.

Still things to do but planning first ride next weekend. This is a user and it will see some action. Gravel roads and trails in the woods. Nothing technical. It will get dirty. That is why I have not focused on finish.

A 1989 Bridgestone MB-1 in Tange Prestige with original Koski fork. "Updated" with XT M737 except LX cranks (XT BB though). NOS M730 seatpost and bolt, Flite 1990, etc.

Planning for tan wall tires but these will have do until I get some. Planning on racer style bar wrap.

Assume you know this is somewhat of a grail bike for some with quite a cult following and yous appears to be in great shape. I would consider making an effort to keep it nice whatever you do with it. Great bike, nice score, well done.

Thank you!

Yes - I am awere of its cult status. When I started contemplating a MTB for my collection I was thinking of something from the eighties, all (quality) steel, lugged, a conventional build. A high end production MTB. Soon landed on/in Bridgestone MB-1. When looking into it a 1989 seemed like a wise choice as it - sort of - has the "best" of everything. I know this to be a very personal view and/but for me the 1989 version has it all.

I bought it as a bare frame (except headset, BB and the original Tange Prestige black handlebar) from the US in time - before - many others wanted them. My original thought was an all out restoration to original spec. It then laid in hibernation for some years and during those years NOS MTB stuff prices rose. I can build a lot of road bikes just out of what I have on the shelves but as I wrote above - MTB is not my comfort zone. I had nothing - no parts at all. Then I moved to a rural location and suddenly and actually need a nice bike to use for light training and "picnic-biking". I found a nice and cheap donor bike with parts some years newer (1993-4). Figured out that I could start to use the MB-1.

It will live a pampered life. It will get used and it will get dirty but I will care for it. When I sell it in a distant future it will still be a very nice original frame and someone will be able to restore it, full original spec, if they want to and can afford it. If I had found this frame as part of a complete and original bike - I might have not used it at all. Now I can enjoy it and it is still around for a future collector to complete. I just take care of it for the time being. Gravel roads, trails - nothing technical.

Hay John, I like the GT Frames. Most any model. I gave one to a friend, and hope to get it back as he is looking to buy a kona with front suspention. It's a shame it's not all built up with original kit. Mine was all original and was given to me to get it out of "their" garage. Full LX kit and worked perfectly after a bit of soap/lube/new cables. Hope you enjoy this one!

And since I'm online, just an update from our recent Old Bike endeavor. Convinced some friends to ride a 45 mile gravel ride with me on March 11th. We rode a few hundred miles on my Stumpjumpers and the Miyata MTB. The ride went well. In total, 4 of us went on the organized ride, One rode an Old Roadmaster Cross bike from the late 80's, we took my Stumpy, my son's Stumpy, and my daughters Miyata. All the bikes did well, no issues on the ride. One issue in training, broke the XT front deraileur on the older stumpjumper, no replacement, so we ran it in the middle ring and just went with it. Total bike cost for all four bikes was $850. I think the average bike cost in this ride was at least twice the total for all our bikes.

Now granted, these bikes took some deterioration on the intense training and completion of the ride. But so would a new one. And they held up great!

Also, during the three month workup, ended up with a Schwinn Moab 1 in my basement for a bit or work. This was my Optomotrist's bike. He is looking to get back into it. I'm hoping he decides to get a new one and I get the Moab to add to my collection. It was totaly stock, had been sitting for about 15 years. I gave it a wash, new cables, and took it on a 30 mile ride to make sure it was in good shape. This baby still had the stock tires! Oh it was a beauty.

Continuing my 90's era mt. bike theme. Both in good condition. Woman contacted me and asked if I wanted a couple of bikes. I said sure and does she know what brand? She said both Mt Shastas. Looked it up and yay, more GT's for me. She said take them before she gives them to Goodwill. Picked them up an hour ago. A Kilimanjaro with the GT splatter paint job and a Backwoods in black. Probably both '93-'94. Great, my size again! Now I'm really up above my head in "bikes-to-keep-and-ride" Why are these bikes finding me? lol I'll probably sell the Backwoods. We'll see.

More finds. Not yet a complete bike but will be somewhere down the line.
Just picked this up today for $20. Novara Ponderosa Scott Nicol design. A bit rough but nothing I can't handle. From what I've briefly searched online, it's around an '87? Should be a good project down the line:

Amazing what a couple weeks can make in the life of a classic mountain bike. Ended up rplacing the shifters and RD with a fresh out of the box Acera setup, tuned and now ready to ride. Today I'm getting the toe straps ready for an agressive trail thrashing.[IMG][/IMG]

My parents flew in to visit it me and we did a fun booze and bike ride. I made a makeshift cargo setup to hold beers, waters, and snacks. This old MTB was LOADED down heavy and didnt skip a beat. A great mountain bike, and also doubles as a fantastic utility hauler!
