That Panasonic is a genuine thing of beauty WimVDD

Edit; got some motivation to try get my Kona together after its been hanging on the wall for the last couple of years while I was too scared to ruin it. First think I did was try out the BB in and it's cross threaded. Does this look repairable? I sure hope I haven't ruined it.

Your Local Bike Shop should be able to chase the threads and face the bottom bracket. My LBS will let me do a "tool rental" and I do it myself. You want to take your time and re-cut it right.
I'll let someone who knows what they are talking about to say if it's ruined forever or not. But for myself, chase & face. Then let's go race!
ciao!

That's exactly what I wanted to hear! Its no restoration, I just want it together and to ride it forever. I'll source a new bb and see if anyone locally can help me out .

The tool is really pricey: https://www.parktool.com/product/bot...cing-set-bts-1 --- $631.95 retail!!
The job itself is about 20 minutes - going slow is best. So a bike shop might - maybe - have to charge something like $40. I am happy to pay my LBS $20~$25 when they let me do it myself. And if he doesn't charge me I try to swing by with a mix-six from Super Fine Liquor store a few days later.
It's these kind of tasks on vintage bikes where a good relationship with your LBS really pays off. Definitely ask around and see if someone will help you out on the cheap.

83 Univega Alpina Uno & 90 Trek 970

I picked up two bike last week, a 1983 Univega Alpina Uno and a 1990 Trek 970. The Univega is for a coworker and has beed tuned up already.

The Trek is for myself, its paint is preserved with little apparent wear. Its all original besides the handlebars and saddle; it has Shimano Deore DX components and the rapid fire shifters still shift smoothly. The original rear rack was also included. I've ordered a a period correct saddle and decided to get a handlebar from a 1990 Trek 990 as I couldn't find the original for this bike. So this bike is waiting for a fresh rebuild. I'm eager to get it put together.

Had the same happen to a beautiful old CCM Mixte a couple of years ago. My local LBS let me borrow his taps but I could not get it started straight and made it even worse. The LBS suggested a product listed under the problem solver section. A BB that has self-centering composite on the ends and tightens into itself. It worked surprisingly well, and was less than $25.

Oh perfect! I spoke to a local bike store who said it shouldn't be a drama if the threads aren't too damaged. Hoping to get it there next week, I'll update when I know.

Thanks for the tips

@Milpool You should use a BB tap like the Park Tools one that comes in from both sides of the shell. It ensures the taps are straight and centered. Most bike shops with reputable service centers should have something of this style.

Yeah that would be ideal. The bike store didn't sound concerned, got the impression he was confident. He has bb's in stock too so I'll get a new one installed while I'm there. My only issue is he said to bring the crank set so we know it's correct. I should've been more prepared and sourced something better than the crappy alivio set that came with it. I have a couple of other bikes in the shed in various states of disrepair, I just have to decide if it should just accept I don't have room or time for them and use one for parts.

I have a pretty average condition 17" 94 cinder cone frame I had planned to put together for my partner who isn't a confident rider so the alivio stuff could be better suited for that. The parts bike is a Barracuda AT2 with XT/LX gear, would be nice to be able to use a lot of that to put together the 93 Cinder Cone and use the lower end stuff on the 94 for the missus but I don't know enough about how interchangeable the fork and headset would be.

Thanks, I love this bike. Just need to find more time to ride it.

Tires are 26 x 2.4/2.2 Front/Rear Maxxis Holy Rollers. The tires have been bombproof, only problem is I'm not overly fond of 'em and they won't die. I think I'm just going to have to stop worrying about wearing them out first and find a better replacement in the same sizes.

The bike is a ~91 Rockhopper Sport if it matters.

The Holy Roller being a BMX/dirt jump tire means the tread is quite thick and won't really wear much from singletrack riding. I've had a couple of smooth tread Maxxis BMX tires on my city/cargo bike for 2 years and they show almost no wear despite regular riding.

Exactly, and I’ve tried. I grew up on BMX/dirt jumping. In the woods that undersized bike almost feels like a BMX with gears, nice to toss around.

1999 Gary Fisher Joshua F4

Rebuilt and ready to ride again, this "basket case" 1999 Gary Fisher Joshua F4 (literally picked up in parts) will have to wait for better weather for a test ride. I was intrigued by the Y frame and full suspension frames of some nineties bikes. It was a little surprising that the BB and wheel bearing and cones were rough and required replacement but the suspension pivots, forks etc were in decent condition. Built by Trek in the USA.

Just picked up this Univega Alpina Uno a couple weeks ago. I think it’s an ‘88 based on the U brakes. Finally had a chance to take it on a long ride today and it rips. I haven’t had a mountain bike since the bike I learned to ride on when I was a kid in the ‘90s.

Thanks! the original shock boots were dirty but in good solid condition. Washed in Dawn dish soap with a toothbrush and wiped with Protectall RV wax. I use that stuff a lot but it seems to no longer be available in Canada. Have to make a trip south soon.

Here’s my finished for now 1988 Cannondale sm500. It doesn’t really see trail use, more of a surf checking curb jumper.
