I finished this one a couple days ago and have been waiting for the sun to shine again to take photos. It's a '91 Paramount Series 50 in Red Marble. Very light 4130 frame, under 26lbs ttl. Drivetrain is upgraded to full NOS Suntour XC Pro Micro Drive, and other than the beefy Shimano LX brake levers w/Suntour XC Pro titanium cantilever brakes (incredible combination), the rest of the components are original or NOS Ritchey. Believe I will be hanging on to this one for awhile.

Well, my new project arrived yesterday--an '89 Trek 950. About $90.00 on ebay. It's especially exciting when a poorly-listed bike arrives, as you hope you did a good job of "reading between the lines" and obtained a "diamond in the rough." This was from an "I Sold It" franchise, which usually means a few poor quality photos and a generic description. Here's how it looked just out of the box:


It stripped down cleanly, with no obvious disasters or stuck parts--always a good beginning. Lucky for me, it appears that this was a town-rider, with true, solid wheels, and what appear to be all original parts with little wear:


The frame cleaned up nicely today, showing off those really nice lugged-steel details:




I plan a pretty basic rebuild on this one. Aside from the saddle, grips, etc., I am planning only to replace the shifters and brakes with a set of NOS LX rapidfires I have had on the shelf for some time. I'll post up some more pics as it comes together...

I don't have pics handy, but will describe my vintage mountain bikes.

First is our Bridgestone MB-5. It is actually my wife's bike, bought new in 1993 or so. Last year, had it overhauled and fitted w/ Xtracycle extension and saddlebags, swept-back handlebars with cork grips and thumbshifters, and Brooks saddle. Also wears fenders (I live in Portland). Now it earns its keep as a grocery-getter, errand-runner, and all-around Useful Bike.

Second is my Bridgestone MB-0. I bought it new in 1991 or 1992, rode it on trails in the San Bernadino Mountains around LA, also strapped a rod tube to it for fishing trips. Put on a Selle Italia Flite saddle shortly after I bought it, a Ritchey WCS bar, removed the Ritchey grips, installed bar ends, and wrapped the grips and bar ends with Cinelli cork tape. Added a Rock Shox fork in the mid-1990s. The Ritchey headset wore out and was replaced, the Mavic front rim also wore out and was replaced. Otherwise the bike still has all the original bits, the Mavic crank, Diacompe brakes, Ritchey stem and post, and so on. Then the bike sat in the garage for a long time, until I got back into riding. Had it overhauled last year too, installed fenders, rack, and a searing dual Nightsun light. My Zip now serves as my rainy day commuter bike.

Last is my Bridgestone XO-1. I know its not a mountain bike, but will mention it anyway. I bought it recently because I've always wanted one. It's the ivory colored frame, the first year with the sidepull brakes, All the component, saddle, etc are original. I might make it my sunny weather commutting bike, I'm not sure yet.

These old thumbshifters were in such good shape, I couldn't bring myself to install those rapidfires...


I plan to give this bike to a 13-year-old aspiring rider. He's lucky it's too small for me, or I'd be tempted to keep this one. His bike is going to be about 5 years older than he is--I hope he appreciates it...

Very nice! I had been wanting a Series 90 for some time as I'm a Suntour fan, so when this Series 50 frame came along I decided to build up my own "90".

BTW... there are no less than 3 Series MOS bikes and 1 frame on ebay at the moment, though none quite up to the Series 90's level.

I have this listed in Nashville TN CL right now. I actually crawled in a giant dumpster at my local recycling center to save this beauty. I cleaned it, adjusted it, put on new tires and rode it on a local trail. This bike is sweet and it's my size but it's gotta go! I'm asking $150.00. Is it priced about right? Wow, lots of pretty cool rigs in this thread.

I just got around to sprucing up my own "classic" from 1991 or so. Its a Giant ATX-760 with full Deore LX STI drivetrain. I had a heck of a time rehab-ing the shifters and wound up soaking them overnight in some magic potion to free them up and get them working right again. The best thing about this rig is the tires. Yes Virginia!, that is the REAL DEAL, the Tioga "Farmer John" on the rear! The color is black chrome and is original. I remember seeing this bike in the shop and just knowing instantly that she would be mine. Of course, Im not quite finished up yet as I need to attend to the pedals but I thought Id post a pic and add to an already pretty great thread.

While we're adding bikes: Just finished a '93 Bianchi Nyala. Like the Raleigh Seneca before it, I did this one up into another heavy tourer/road/city commuter. The bike's basically stock with slightly later Shimano shifters, Bontraeger 26x2 tyres, mudguards, front and rear bag mounts. This'll be the bike I take on the Chesapeak Canal Trail this summer. The Seneca is still around, but it's now permanently in the back room at work as my lunch time errand runner.

I still have a 1986-1987 Marin Muirwoods with ALL ORIGINAL Parts except tires. Works great, looks awesome. Rode it in the dirt 2wks ago. Here are some specs and pics.

I don't know why it took me so long to get around to building this one. The hardest part was stripping the pink paint off the bars and stem and polishing them up. Yep, pink. This project started out with just a '86 chrome Mt Hood frame and fork. I had intended on building it up with a front suspension fork and a few other custom bits. Then I found a mint low mileage Mt Hood in Teal and Pink so a marriage was born.

It's all original/correct except for the usual consumables, the pedals, and the seatpost as it was a different size. Even the original foam grips are like new! This is my first experience with Shimano U-brakes and I really like them. Excellent stopping power! Also, check out the unique (to Ross) bulbous stem.

I thought I posted here already? I don't see my name anywhere, so here goes. I don't have anything super special or rare, but they're not junk either. The 84 Trek 830 is my favorite(pre antelope I guess?)

84 Trek 830. Lugged goodness. It look raggedy, but rides new pretty much. It will get a repaint in the coming months. Going with a black metallic. A few shades darker than the 83 slate grey color. Wheels were replaced with non helico Maillard with black hubs. Has cheapy slicks, and may get a tall stem and Moustache bars by the time it's all said and done. Very solid, predictable, and even somewhat fast bike.



The MB-5. I picked it up at the flea market for $45, and they were grinning ear to ear, hehe. I guess they
thought they were ripping me off, haha. Cleaned up, new atb tires, and a rack. I also upgraded to underbar M system shifters. (Sorry Grant ) Rides okay, but these steep stay Bridgestones are too twitchy for my taste.



This one is an odd deal. No metal pedigree sticker to be found. It's a Roland Racing. I've only ever seen them called just plain "Roland". It's a local brand that imports bikes from overseas. It's chrome(duh) and has forged drops, and isn't all that heavy considering. The headbadge is a very cool looking inlaid thing in yellow and kelly green. Rides nice, and is very spooky in how much it looks like the 830, even the fork crown is exact. No lugs though, and someone put shimmed riser bars and a road bike stem on it? The angles are a little different, but they have similar riding feel.




A Specialized Hard Rock that has since been sold. Nice machine, just too small for me....Bought for $40, Sold for $150 after it was done.

A pretty clean Santa Fe MTB. It's been traded. I still miss it.

I'm currently fixing up a 1993 (maybe 94) Specialized Hard-Rock for use with an xtracycle kit.
I also might fix up a really funky old columbia. It's "ATB by columbia" and the model name is Trail Blazer.
It looks like a cheap frame but cool old parts.

The original tires were actually labeled Sierra. They had a rib down the middle which made the bike a little more usable on the streets as well as off road.
