Pinarello Veneto - Late 80's
Ok, so I get my raise at work, have some back pay coming to me, and I see this blue Pinarello Veneto on ebay that just got listed...
... so what do I do? Plop a bid down on it without the faintest hope of ever winning it. But just in case I do decide to be reckless with my backpay - any more info on this bike??
(It's got downtube shifters so I figure it's vintage enough for this forum...)
From Auction:
Lugged Steel 59 cm Pinarello Veneto with Campagnolo Components in excellent condition
Made from Oria tubing, just like the bikes Indurain rode, this bike rides like a champ. From about 1988 or 1989, this bike has seen little use. The paint is in great shape with a few minor scratches and scuffs. The cobalto blue paint job is stunning and makes the frame and fork glitter like a jewel in the sun.
Lugged steel Italian bikes like Pinarello's, DeRosa's, Torpado's, and Bianchi's are a breed apart and are getting harder to find. You won't find a better riding bike than this one, and the components are like new too.
23.5" seat tube (59 cm) measured center to center
22.5" (57 cm) top tube c-c
7 speed indexed shifting
oh, and by no means am I trying to call dibs on this auction. I just wanted to be able to say I 'bid' on an Italian steel bike.

do some research, find out what the bike is worth, and decide how much you want to pay. Drop that amount in the last 15 seconds or so. If someone else thinks it is more important to have, they win. Oh, well, there'll be another. I sometimes get the same results on parts just posting a bid, but for two things -
1. There's often someone who doesn't know the floating "retail" for a particular thing, and they are willing to pay more - they will drive the bid over what the thing is worth.
2. There's a standard scam on eBay - The seller uses a shil bidder to drive the price over your highest estimate, and then you get the "second chance" offer to sell, often immediately after the auction ends. The seller discovers exactly how much you are willing to pay and then offers it to you for your highest bid. Not fair, but awfully hard to finger. If you wait til the time is up - the shil bidder sometimes doesn't get a chance to drive your bid.

Google isn't much help when it comes to this bike. I lowered my bid a bit in a moment of "wtf did I just do?" though I know even my original bid would have been topped in due time. So my new bid has already been beat, but I'll at least keep a close eye on it.
Seller aslo has an 80's Trek 560 that looks to be in pretty nice shape still. The frame-only search hasn't been going well and if I can find a full bike with some parts on it worth keeping while replacing the rest with my NOS Shimano group I've been complaining about not haing a bike for over the last few weeks (anyone tired of hearing that yet :-P )
