Cant force myself to paint the PX-10

I had the idea of repainting the 73' px-10 back to original colors, I even went as far as getting a original sticker set on ebay(which is nothing like the original mind you).
BUT, I dont think I will be able to go through with it...those hand painted lugs with the 'imperfections' give the bike so much character in my eyes. Even though the paint if flaking off the forks and the bikes has some nicks and scrapes, there is just something about knowing somebody over 30 years ago in a far off land painted this by hand. It might just be me, but I love it the way it is, even if I have to put up with my GF telling me it looks like something you would see at goodwill.

I haven't seen your bike, but I tend to agree with you in many cases. Often, the bike is worth more with its original paint, even when it is 30-year-old French paint.

i know exactly how you feel. i have a 1974 bob jackson with hand painted acsents on all the lugs. sometimes i get frustrated with all the chips in the paint and think about a repaint, even inquired at bob jackson in leeds. for what they want to repaint i could buy a small country. i guess i have resolved to touchup the paint chips as best i can and be happy with the bike the way it is. there is just a certain "classic" look that you don't see on newer bikes. enjoy!

Nick,
There are shops that do "restoration" type of painting, i.e.
the fill chips etc. and protect the original patina as much as possible.
I feel the same way about my RIH. I will not repaint it, just clean
it up and ride it patina and all. Heck I'm not sure how much cleaning
I want to do I would hate to mar the finish even more than it is
now.
There was a good article about different steps of repaint that I will post
if I can find.
Marty

Cyclart will touch it up for you. I was going to have them do my '74 PX10 until I learned that it would cost more than I thought a total repaint would cost.

whether or not to repaint your classic ride cannot be placed in the balances because the gf dislikes the paint, fugly or not. use your gut-feeling when deciding, but if its a custom job you just can't repaint. rust must be considered a problem with bad scratches & dings, & that might have to be kept in check with a nice rustproof paintjob

use maguires cleaner wax (safe for clear coats) and you would be surprised as how much surface junk it removes. i just finished my 66 px10 and will post a pic of it soon, alot of small scratches and surface marks from storage and clamps. also color change on the exposed frame compared to where the clamps were.

Dirtdrop- how much was a touch up a cycleart??

As for the "Goodwill" comment, many of us are proud to have saved a bike from the local thrift store. Sometimes you find a jewel in amongst the Huffys and pay $10-15 for a bike that cost hundreds new.

Circa 1970, when bicycle theft was rampant at UCLA and elsewhere, some of us deliberately painted our bikes to look cheap/old/ratty/whatever. I did this to my first Capo (1960 Modell Campagnolo), which had already been repainted once, anyway. It was kind of fun riding a full Reynolds 531 stealth beater, particularly when passing other cyclists on the road.

Be warned that paying a bundle for a beautiful paint job, as I did with my current Capo, does change your entire relationship with the machine. You will ride it less, but show it off more.

This is what I used on my PX-10.
The colors are included to touch up the decals, as well as the main frame paint.
Get a fine pointed-tip brush at a hobby store.

Should have waited until Jan 1st then the thread would be 10 years old. Must be a record for a thread resurrection.

I always feel like such a sap when I find out that I've responded to an ancient thread--though I don't suppose it really matters.

It just makes me feel 10 years younger, Jon.
