Chrome Carlton
Hi There - newbie here trying to find info on a particular cycle.
I am a total novice , and really know very little.
The bike in question is currently in my garage, so the details I shall provide are from memory (I will get more info tomorrow in day light).
Its from the 70s or 80s I'm pretty sure. Its a chrome frame (real chrome, not silver painted), and has a Carlton Cycles "badge" on the frame, think its a 27inch frame and its a 10 speed.
It looks really plain , with the only markings on it being the badge.
I realise this is not much to go on (!) but I can get any particular pics or info that would help ID it.
thanks for your help
andrew

Possibly '70s, but more likely '60s. If the lugs are plain looking, I'd guess that it's a Carlton Continental... Really need to post some pictures to ID it though.

Looks like a Continental, but with many upgraded parts? I'm guessing that yours is mid-late '60s. Bars, stem, and brake levers/hoods look original. I've got one from the early '60s, but with the transparent blue lacquer over the chrome. Same lugs as yours.

Thanks for that OG..................I can only vouch for it from 1980 onwards , so any upgrades must have been done before then (I think). Are these bikes collectable?

above the level of curbtrash or guttersnipe. Please send it to me and i will be more
than happy to safely dispose of it (I'll ride it off into the sunset).
If it is larger than 22in , yah they are collectable (smaller than 21 also).

Why's this? Does it only apply to these kinds of Carltons from the '60s? What about Carltons from the '70s?

Looks like a lower end Carlton from the later 70s. Though Raleigh owned the name from 1957 or so, the continued to be made as Carltons for many years. One of their finishes was transparent paint over chrome. If stripped, it would end up with a chrome frame with no decals.

The brakes appear to be Mafac, which wouldn't be original if the levers are Weinmann (which mine also has). The cranks look like late '70s, as does the saddle. The pedals look like original, and are probably from the '60s... I still think mid-late '60s, with some '70s bits replacing the originals.

With that headbadge, the 60's. Lots of replacement /upgraded parts it appears. The challenge with this bike is keeping the chrome looking good after cleanup. Keep it, ride it if you are at least 5'10", consider selling if yor are significantly shorter. With the seat at that height, by voice goes up just looking at it.

Thanks for the replys so far guys............I am going to sell it, and I will put it in the market place on this forum first - but I have no idea of what to ask for or how to market it originality wise. Can anyone give me a rough price I should be looking for or expect? I am in the UK.
